Shakira foot healing update š¾
I wanted to share a quick progression of Shakiraās foot so everyone can see how far sheās come.
The last photo is the day after her foot was debrided : very raw, very swollen, and clearly painful.
The middle photo shows the healing phase starting : less inflammation and the wound beginning to stabilize.
The first photo is from now : healthy pink tissue, reduced swelling, and steady healing progress.
Sheās still healing and still being carefully managed, but the improvement is real and consistent. Iām really proud of how strong sheās been through all of this, and Iām grateful for everyone whoās been supporting her along the way. š
Slow progress is still progress and sheās moving in the right direction.

Shakira has a follow-up appointment on Friday, February 13th. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to check my bio or the comments.
Any support would be deeply appreciated. Last weekās unexpected urgent visit for her foot wasnāt planned, but it was necessary for her care. This paycheck is already committed to rent and utilities, so things are pretty tight right now.

Shakira update:
So today I went to do Shakira's foot soak and discovered one of her scabs was coming off and there was so much pus. I set her in her foot soak bin with warm water and Betadine and fed her a treat while I called my vet. The vet had me bring her in urgently. She removed the scab and scraped out the pus and necrotic tissue. She put a coagulant gel in the wound to stop bleeding and a stem cell gel to support tissue growth. She then packed and wrapped the foot and showed me how to wrap it.
As gruesome as it sounds, this is a good sign as far as the bumblefoot goes. It means the infection is trying to come out, which means what I have been doing with her feet is working.
I am not foolish. I know she will never be miraculously healthy. I know she is old, and she has cancer.
However, I also know she is still lively, happy, and bright. I am on the same page as my vet, and we agreed we will get her in at a moment's notice once her quality of life is not what it is right now.
Anyway, she is doing well. Eating and pooping well. Drinking. And very active. We are going to do soaks once a day instead of twice, as per the vet's orders, and establish a balance between having her foot wrapped and unwrapped so that the wound can still breathe.

Unfortunately, we may be approaching a very difficult decision regarding Shakira.
Even though she is still bright, energetic, happy, eating well, and pooping normally, she is working much harder to breathe as the days progress. This is something I was warned could happen as the cancer continues to spread.
At this point, my main focus is keeping her comfortable and ensuring she has the best quality of life possible for as long as she remains happy and stable. I am also beginning to prepare and set aside funds for the possibility of humane euthanasia, should that ever become necessary.
This is not a decision being made lightly or prematurely. It is about love, dignity, and making sure that if the time comes, she will not suffer.
If you wish to info will be in comments.

Itās cold. Thatās no mystery to anyone right now. But what do you do for your piggies and rabbits if the power goes out and you have no heat?
1. Hay, hay, hay!!!!
Give large piles of loose hay. Theyāll burrow into it, and digestion helps generate body heat.
2. Fleece is your friend.
Double up on liners or pads and keep everything as dry as possible.
2a. Cage coverage.
Drape fleece over sections of the top and sides of the cage, but do not block ventilation.
3. Monitor water bottles closely.
They can freeze much faster than youād expect.
4. Battery operated thermometers are a game changer.
Temps below 60°F are where things start getting dangerous, especially for guinea pigs.
5. Block drafts.
Cover windows and doorways with heavy blankets to help keep heat inside the room.
Have more tips? Drop them below.

Iām angry. And I think Iām allowed to be.
After speaking with a guinea pig expert, itās become clear that because of Shakiraās age and the sheer number of serious health issues sheās dealing with, her chances of recovery are not good.
What makes this so hard to accept is that this didnāt come out of nowhere. Shakira didnāt decline overnight. She sat with worsening problems for 6 to 8 months before help was sought. Months where early intervention could have made a real difference. Months where pain, infection, and decline were allowed to progress.
If I had been contacted when this first started, there is so much more I could have done.
Right now, Iām focused on giving her comfort, dignity, and relief while her body is already exhausted from long-term neglect and untreated illness. I have been treating her bumblefoot, managing urine scald, monitoring her closely, and advocating for her by seeking expert guidanceābecause she deserves informed care, even when the truth hurts.
I will know more clinically after her veterinary appointment on Wednesday at 2:30, but that doesnāt erase the reality of how much damage prolonged inaction can cause.
This is why early action matters. Guinea pigs hide pain exceptionally well. Waiting because something ādoesnāt seem that bad,ā minimizing symptoms, or hoping it will fix itself can completely take away their chance at recovery.
Shakira still has spark. She still has personality. And thatās what makes this so painful. Loving an animal sometimes means facing the consequences of delayed care and focusing on what is kind now, not what feels easier.
I wish she had been given help sooner. She deserved that chance.
I will still do everything I can to fight for Shakira as long as it is right and fair to her. I will not force her to suffer or endure more pain than her little body can handle. If me and my vet decide together that it is time for Shakira to peacefully leave this world then that is what will happen. Until that time I will do everything in my power to ensure she's as happy and loved as she should have been her whole life.
