Many PS3 games will become lost forever.

Recently, the topic of the 360 store closing has brought up the silver lining that Xbox still supports it to some extent because of Xbox’s great backwards compatibility. See, Sony can't feasibly do this since the PS5 and the PS4 physically can't play PS3 games. This is because the PS3 was built upon a processor known as Cell. Because the Cell processor was such a diversion from standard computer architecture, it made the PS3 incredibly costly to produce. On top of that, it proved very difficult to develop games for. Following the logical path, Sony decisively moved away from it with the release of the PS4. Because of this, PS3 games cannot run on standard architecture like the PS4 and PS5 have.

TL;DR it's really hard to get PS3 games running on anything but a PS3.
