3 Sounds of -ED 🎯

Did you know that -ed doesn’t always sound the same? 🤔

When we add -ed to a verb, it can be pronounced in three different ways:

🔹 /ɪd/ – after /t/ or /d/ sounds
Examples: wanted, needed, painted

🔹 /t/ – after voiceless (unvoiced) sounds
Examples: helped, looked, washed, laughed

🔹 /d/ – after voiced sounds
Examples: played, cleaned, smiled, loved

💡 Remember: Don’t look at the spelling—listen to the final sound of the base word. The pronunciation of -ed depends on the last sound, not the last letter.

Mastering these three sounds helps children improve their reading, pronunciation, spelling, and speaking confidence.
