Brimstone, an archaic name for the element commonly known as Sulfur (S, Sulphur), is a flammable, chemical substance. At room temperature, it's a brittle, crystalline solid – but when ignited, it produces toxic sulfur dioxide SO² gas.
This process releases the characteristic smell of burnt matches or rotten eggs and is a severe respiratory irritant, damaging eyes, skin, and lungs.
