I spent much of my youth worrying about what life would look like if I left Islam, fearing judgment from the Muslim community and betrayal from those closest to me. Almost all those fears came true. But looking back now, those concerns feel distant and irrelevant. I broke free from the pressure to conform to people who were stuck in their own limitations. The irony is, those most opposed to me leaving Islam were often the most insecure about their own faith. They needed me to stay Muslim to avoid confronting their doubts, and, more critically, the reality of Islam itself. Moral of the story? Stay true to who you are. If people cut you off (be it family or friends) for making a personal choice that doesn’t truly affect them, let them go. They never truly loved or accepted you.
