Okay so I have to say I liked this second trailer WAY more than the first one. Seemed to have way more heart and be far more interesting, although a lot of the same issues are still there. Notably the very overdone trope of "girl that finds out she has mysterious powers", among many others. Thoughts?

Okay so I watched Forgotten Island yesterday and I have thoughts..

Off the bat I need to say that I was forced to watch it in Spanish instead of English because there are no English viewings anywhere near me...which is simply INSANE. So fucking frustrating. (I live near Valencia, Spain - for context lol)

Obviously I'm not gonna take into account the voice acting, but let's talk about everything else. First off: the batshit crazy pace. Most people have mentioned this, but it's legitimately shocking how fast things go and how frenetic the entire movie is. This is like the complete opposite of a Ghibli movie lol. Some people will love it, especially the part of the audience that is used to short-form content, but honestly it's just a disservice to the story. It's WAY too fast. Films need moments of pause to be able to digest what's happening, which makes later plot points hit harder. The third act was better with this, having a few stretches that were less ridiculously frenetic, which is also why the third act is by far the highlight of the movie. Reminds me a lot of KPDH in that way, since the pace of that movie is also FAST.

That being said, the animation is absolutely insane in the best way possible. Creativity was OOZING from every frame in the movie, and it's obvious animators put a metric ton of effort in making this movie look and feel unique, which is absolutely awesome. The different styles, the comedic moments, the mix of 3D&2D done perfectly. The only thing I think wasn't done well was the anime part, the anime style didn't really look great imo, it looked like a cheap version of an anime.

The story was good, with twists and turns that were interesting, and with two protagonists that have a genuinely interesting dynamic and an interesting conflict. Some of the jokes landed for me, some not so much. There are a LOT of gags in this one. Like omg, an overwhelming amount. I think that kinda detracts from the movie hitting harder emotionally. That being said, the final moments still got me emotional. Also, the villain is good but not that great - loved the design and the creepiness but they should've leaned harder into it and developed the villain more.

Overall, a very entertaining movie. Loved the Filipino roots of the film, as someone that used to live in Manila aaaages ago, it took me back in the best way. Far from Dreamworks' best this decade (The Wild Robot and The Last Wish both clear by a large margin) That being said, the fact it hasn't even made $50M is WILD to me...makes absolutely no sense.

Honestly didn't believe I would ever get to the point where studios actually noticed the channels and videos, but I couldn't be happier about the fact that it was Laika! This is cool as fuck, I'm not even gonna try to hide how excited and happy I was when I received this email. This is all thanks to YOU GUYS! Still dreaming of the day that I get invited to the premiere of one of these animated movies by the studio, or to get to work with one of these animation studios. I'm aiming to get an invitation to Beyond the Spider-Verse's premiere next year, do you guys think we can make it happen? 👀

First off I want to say thanks a ton for the reception on my latest video, I appreciate it so much. It's still hard to fathom how many of you enjoy & support the content ❤️🥺

Over the last few months I've been upping the production quality by expanding the team, hiring a new editor, getting some help with research, and I want to continue to improve the content as much as possible. My dream has always been to become the MKBHD of animation video essays, and although I still have a LONG way to go to get there, (and it's ambitious af) I'm trying to continuously take steps in that direction. Thoughts on the new Ray Gunn Trailer?!

I really enjoyed it. This is probably one of the movies I was looking forward to the most this year, and the trailer does make it seem like it has potential. I LOVE the fact that it's a retro-futuristic neo-noir alien detective movie, that's already a sign this is going to be unique and different from everything we've been getting - FINALLY. Love the dynamic Ray seems to have with his colleague, and the writing seems pretty decent, with some good lines throughout the trailer.

Honestly the music in the first few seconds of the trailer immediately reminded me of the Incredibles. Some of the score is extremely nostalgic, which I love. This might be a hot take though, I wish they showed less in the trailer. I LOVE the that Ray seems to end up falling for Venus, but it would've been so cool to discover that while watching the movie, instead of already having that in the trailer.

Another thing that bothered me is having Scarlett Johansson as Venus, I'm sorry I just don't think she's a great voice actor. I wish we got a more unique performance, cause it's hard to not just hear Scarlett Johansson.

That being said, I'm going to parrot what most people have been saying, this OBVIOUSLY deserves a theatrical release, it's a no-brainer.

I fucking KNEW it could make $100M+ 😎🥳 This is honestly a massive haul for the movie, with most people doubting it could get this far. It'll probably end around 110M-120M.

Ketchup only paid 50M, plus an estimated 10M in marketing according to Deadline, while they sold off the international rights for 20M. Therefore they're down around $40M for the movie, and it would have to probably hit around $80M domestically to break even for them. Right now the movie is at around 55M domestically, so it'll be hard to get that high. Nevertheless, they also have the rights to revenue from streaming. That, along with other ancillary revenue should make this a profitable purchase for them.

Regardless, for a movie that was shelved, this is genuinely a MASSIVE success.
