Went sketching in the park with Emily and Daidus from @SpilledInkyt yesterday! (That means I’ll be making a second guest appearance on Spilled Ink soon 😆)
It was such a gorgeous day with cherry blossoms in full bloom! Tokyo will be raining non-stop for a few days so sadly this is probably my last sakura painting of the season. Working on a sakura-themed sketching adventure video for next week 🌸
Just finished off the final spreads for my Tokyo Hidden Gems zine! So happy to finally be done with the main content for this nearly year-long project 😭
Now I just need to draw the cover, take apart the sketchbook and scan everything, post-process, do layout & design, translate into 3 versions, and send off to printing 😅
This zine introduces my favorite off-the-beaten-path things to do in various areas throughout Tokyo. This will be published as an art book around end of April, and will be available in English, Japanese, and Chinese. Stay tuned!
☝️ I officially quit my day job as a product designer at Google, and became a full-time artist. This was such an incredibly difficult decision because I'm one of those weird people who actually love their job. But in the end, I decided to take this leap of faith, because if I don't give art a try with my all, I feel like I'll spend the rest of my life wondering "what if".
✌️ I just reached monetization, at exactly 3 months after starting this YouTube channel! That means I can start earning from the ads that YouTube is already showing in my videos. This is so reassuring right after I quit my job 😭
Even my (very Asian) parents, who were so dumbfounded by my decision to quit my nice office job, decided to go out and celebrate 🥹
I'm still very much a small-time creator/artist, but darn do I feel so lucky and grateful and happy right now!!
A huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone watching this channel! You are quite literally helping me achieve my dream. And especially to @SpilledInkyt for the collab that helped me grow SO MUCH. I seriously don't know how I got this lucky.
If you haven't seen my latest video yet, I talked about how I gained confidence as an artist through boothing at art fairs, which eventually helped me reach the decision to quit my job. Full video here: https://youtu.be/3FVlYBuBh1Y
Sorry for this long ramble, and just know that you have my sincerest gratitude. -Bingying
Sketched a historical house in Yokohama with the Urban Sketchers Tokyo crew 🎨🗼
This past weekend was the annual sketchbook exhibit put on by USK Tokyo, where you can flip through sketchbooks of many super talented sketchers from Tokyo and beyond.
It’s always such a treat to see their art, and every year it inspires me to sketch bigger, bolder, and looser! That’s how this sketch was born and I’m so happy with it 😊
Hoping to make a video about this amazing exhibit soon! (Arghhh I have so much backlog footage)
I had the best time yapping about art and sharing my journey as a traveling painter with the amazing Daidus & Emily! This was so much fun to film and I hope you'll have fun watching it too 😆
I’ll be making a guest appearance on @SpilledInkyt ‘s new episode, dropping tomorrow! I had such a blast hanging out and painting with Emily and Daidus, can’t wait for you all to see it 😆 We’ll be having a lot of fun with watercolors and I’ll even share some painting tips!
Plein air sketch today for my Tokyo Hidden Gems art book (scrambling to finish it this month so I can publish in April!)
I've been doing so many small illustrations of food and storefronts for this zine, I really wanted to also have a bigger landscape scene that captures the local vibe of Tokyo. Couldn't be happier with how this turned out!
This is Tennozu Isle - a small man-made island in Tokyo Bay that is home to some very artistic hidden gems, like a warehouse for architecture models and a beautiful art supply store. I'll be making a video of my sketching adventure here soon!
I had an amazing time exhibiting at Zine Fest Tokyo! I've had so many people say they were inspired by me to draw more, and that's just the happiest feeling in the world 😭
I also met a traveler from Sweden who watched my YouTube videos, and specifically took time out of her Japan trip to see me at Zine Fest! It was so sweet!!
I have more market booths coming up in April, May, and June, so come visit me if you're in Japan! Detailed schedule in last image
Also, I added 15 new watercolor postcard prints to my Etsy shop 💌
These are quality art prints on super-extra-thick watercolor texture card-stock, perfect as wall decor or for mailing. They come in a new "Colors of Japan's 4 Seasons" set, or you can pick any 5 postcards for 28% off!
This new video is my ultimate love letter to travel sketching! My 3-day drawing adventure in Chiang Mai perfectly encapsulated everything I love about sketching on the go: 1️⃣ utilizing little pockets of downtime to get creative, instead of doomscrolling 2️⃣ observing beautiful scenes more closely, and connect with the destination more deeply 3️⃣ building genuine human connections across cultures through a shared language for art 4️⃣ immortalizing little moments of joy, to be enjoyed through your sketchbook for ages to come
Come along for this therapeutic getaway and discover the magic of travel sketching with me :) Full video here: https://youtu.be/snQ8mm3jKiQ
Here's my art market schedule for the next few months 👩🏻🎨 If you're in town this spring, feel free to swing by! I'll be selling my art prints / postcards, illustration books, stickers and other goodies, and I will also bring my original travel sketchbooks for everyone to flip through!
If you can't make it in person, everything is also available for (fairly cheap) international shipping from my Etsy store: www.etsy.com/shop/travelingpalette
