Avery Vernie Shorts, known as "Peaches," was a beautiful little girl who was just 6 years old when some soulless person took her life just one day after Christmas.
Peaches left her home in the Montgomery Village housing projects, with her coat buttoned and ribbons in her pigtails, on December 26th, 1980, to buy a cold drink for her Mother.
She was used to wandering around her neighborhood, and her neighbors were used to seeing her, so this day was not unusual until Peaches didn't return home.
Her sister recalls their Mother looking out the window and saying, "Where is Peaches?" when she didn't return.
Police were notified, and search parties canvassed the ground while helicopters searched from above. The Police chief even brought in a psychic, but nothing came of it.
The searches and all the efforts from the Knoxville Police Department failed to bring Peaches home. She remained missing until a cold January day in 1982, when a rabbit hunter found her small skeletal remains under an overturned cattle chute in a field near a dump on the University of Tennessee Extension Farm off of Singleton Station Road in Blount County, TN.
Her remains were still fully dressed, and her pigtails were found near her skull with the ribbons still intact.
Detective James Winston was assigned to the case over 24 hours after she went missing. He has given statements over the years, saying this case has always stuck with him. He also stated that there has been only one real suspect in the case.
That suspect was a man named Mitchell Reed. He had been dating Peaches' mom, and the two had been fighting the day Peaches went missing. He allegedly threw change for a drink down and told the Mom that he would "get even" before stomping out the door.
Mitchell Reed, who is now deceased, always denied involvement. However, he treated the subject of Peaches' disappearance and murder like a game. He admitted going to the store after arguing with her mom, but claimed he never saw Peaches. He refused a polygraph, claiming he didn't like being hooked up to machines.
One break came when a boy told police he had seen Peaches outside the store, talking to a man who looked like Reed, in a brown car. The boy later recanted, but it was thought he may have been pressured to take back his statement. He was just a child himself.
A dog picked up Peaches scent on Reed's Cadillac, and her remains were found just about a mile from his parents home.
When Reed's wife, Mary, was asked about his involvement, she said, "I won't say he didn't do it," she said. "He never talked to me about it. If he did it, he knows. "God knows who did it. God knows, and he knows."
Reed spent a lot of time incarcerated, and when he went to court one last time in 2002, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault on a child. Despite the belief that he was responsible and the suspicious circumstances surrounding his behaviour, he was never charged with anything related to the disappearance, death, or disposal of little Peaches.
If you have any information regarding this case, please call the Knoxville Police Department at 865-215-7317.
If anyone has information, please come forward; it doesn't matter if the person responsible is alive or not. Peaches deserves for the person responsible to be named either way, and her remaining loved ones deserve closure.

A horrific airplane crash happened today. #GregBiffle and his family lost their lives. 🙏for his family and friends. Greg was a race car driver.
Today…our hearts are shattered. We are mourning not just the loss of a legendary figure in motorsports, but the loss of a man whose courage, compassion and love for community went far beyond the racetrack. Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, along with his beloved wife and children, were tragically killed in a plane crash this morning. The devastation of this news is almost impossible to put into words.
Greg was known by millions as a fierce competitor and 19-race winner in the NASCAR Cup Series, a driver who entertained and inspired fans across the country. But here in Western North Carolina, we knew him for something even deeper…his selfless heart and unwavering dedication to helping others.
When Hurricane Helene tore through our communities, leaving destruction in its wake, Greg didn’t hesitate. He used his own helicopter to fly into the hardest hit and most isolated areas…delivering food, water, medicine and vital supplies to families cut off by the storm’s fury. He didn’t do it for praise or recognition…he did it because he cared. Because he believed in lifting people up when they needed it most.
His efforts weren’t just heroic…they were a reminder of the best parts of humanity. Because of Greg, lives were touched, families were helped…and hope was restored at a time when so many felt lost.
Words feel inadequate right now, but to the Biffle family…we’re keepin’ y’all in our thoughts and prayers. To Greg’s friends, fans and everyone he ever helped…we mourn with you. This loss is profound.
Thank you, Greg…for your kindness, your service and your boundless generosity. You made a difference here in Western North Carolina…and you will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Greg Biffle and precious family. We love y’all.
