Marco (Les Variations) and I were recording with the famous "O Jays" at Music Farm Studios in New York City when, on a day off, we met Richie Havens. He asked us to play on his new single "Peace." Marco was the guitarist, and I was the bassist and backing vocalist.
Richie was a great artist, probably the most humane and generous man one can meet. Music Farm is a legendary recording studio where the greatest artists of the '60s recorded their timeless hits.
For years, Gene Pitney managed the studio and preserved its atmosphere. They never repainted the interior walls that held all those magical vibrations.
I felt like a student while trying to play at his tempo. We were supposed to record some of my songs as a duet. What a dream !
But unfortunately, our vocal ranges were too different. Finally (and that’s good enough for me), he masterfully recorded one of these songs alone: “Just because”
In 1979, This photo captures that glorious day with Ray and Jean Pierre Grosz, my close and unpredictable friend. He later became Ray’s manager.
Being invited for a session in his own recording studio was nothing short of miraculous.
Ray’s best joke was to turn off all the lights and quickly walk through the hallways in the dark. It was hard to follow because we were the ones who were blind.
A very long production, started in Paris, continued in Spain, and completed back in Paris. The videographer, A. Blanc, did an excellent job working with bits of film and exchanging with me remotely.
