Hello,
Why do dentists find it difficult to manage their finances?

I would like to share my experience here so that it might help a lot of you.

What I used to do till one year back is that suppose a patient pays me 10,000/- for a procedure, the first thought that used to come to my mind was what dental equipment to buy now??

This is where the problem arises. We (dentists) are never taught about managing our finances. So since one year I have read at least 10-15 books on "Managing Money".

here are a few takeaways for you:

1) We have always learnt that sales-expenses=profit. Well, I would like to change this to Sales-Profit=Expenses.

What I mean here is that we shall always pay ourselves first. Then the amount left should be used for our expenses, including inventory.

For example, if a patient pays me 10,000/-, then 6000/- (or 60%) would directly go to my Mutual Fund, or Equity or whatever my investment scheme is. Rest 4000/- will be used to pay my lab expense and rest will be saved in my bank account for future expenses.

2) Never keep all of your money easily accessible. This is how we can prevent useless expenditures. For this, start using a separate bank account.

3) Keep your money invested. So that your money is working for you even when you are asleep. To learn more about investing, I will make some videos if I get enough requests in the comments section.

4) Keep some fund separate as "Emergency Fund". This is to be kept as FD or liquid fund and not to be invested for long term.

Please share your opinion on this post in they comments section. Let me know what do you think about this topic.

cheers!
