🇺🇸 A Message From Veterans for Veterans 🇺🇸

This Veterans Day, our hearts are with every man and woman who has worn the uniform—and with every family that has stood beside them.

In years past, we’ve gathered here in Las Vegas with food, laughter, and community—to celebrate the bond that unites us as veterans. But this year is different.

With the country facing a government shutdown, many of our fellow Americans are going without pay. Even some active-duty military are continuing to serve without knowing when their next paycheck will come.

It’s during moments like these that our mission becomes more urgent, more personal, and more necessary than ever.

💥 So instead of hosting our annual celebration, we’re redirecting our time and resources to serve veterans at risk of going without the essentials—food, shelter, and support.

Because honoring our service doesn’t happen just once a year.
It happens every time we show up for each other.
It happens every time we remind one another: You are not alone.

This week—and every week—Veterans for Veterans is committed to showing up for our brothers and sisters, not just with words, but with action.

To every veteran reading this:
You’ve earned our respect.
You’ve earned our support.
You’ve earned our continued care.

🫡 We are here for you.
We see you.
We’ve got you.

Together, we rise.

Prepare To Compete: VA Benefits

I’m excited to share a significant update from the Department of Defense (DOD) and the VA that will greatly benefit our Veterans and their caregivers.

Beginning November 1, 2024, Veterans and eligible caregivers will have easier access to DOD installations through an updated process that simplifies both enrollment and access to these essential facilities.

What Does This Mean?

DOD installations provide vital services for Veterans and their caregivers, such as:
• Health care services
• Commissary and exchange shopping
• Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) services like golf courses, movie theaters, and clubs

This streamlined process also complements recent efforts to improve health care access for Veterans in Alabama, the Gulf Coast, Tampa, Kentucky, New York’s Hudson Valley, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Key Updates to Enrollment for DOD Installation Access
Veterans and caregivers who don’t have a VA-issued Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) can now enroll for installation access using a REAL ID Act-compliant driver’s license or non-driver’s ID.

Enrollment Requirements:
To enroll for recurring installation access, Veterans and caregivers must:
1. Present an acceptable credential (VHIC or REAL ID) to establish identity.
2. Undergo a criminal record and terrorism check on-site to establish fitness.
3. Verify eligibility for installation benefits electronically to establish purpose (e.g., proof of health care appointments if applicable).

Enrollment is typically valid for 1 to 3 years or 1 year after the last visit to the installation. Expired credentials will require re-enrollment.

Accessing Commissary, Exchange, and MWR Services
While the updated process allows for electronic verification at the installation gates, Veterans and caregivers who wish to access commissary, exchange, or MWR services without a VHIC must still provide a hard copy of one of the following documents:
• VA-issued caregiver patronage letter
• VA-issued service-connected disability letter
• VA Health Eligibility Center Form H623A

For MWR, commissary, and exchange shopping, eligible caregivers are those designated as a primary family caregiver under VA’s Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.

Resources and Additional Information
These updates demonstrate a significant step forward in improving access for Veterans and their caregivers, and I encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the process to support our community better.

Prepare To Compete: VA Benefits

Will Veteran VA Benefits Be Cut Under the Trump Administration in 2025?

There has been ongoing discussion about potential changes to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under a proposed policy framework known as "Project 2025." While this framework includes recommendations for restructuring the VA, it’s important to clarify that these are proposals, not enacted policies. Any actual changes would require legislative or executive actions and may face debate and revision.

Here’s what we know so far:
• The framework emphasizes focusing VA resources on conditions directly tied to military service, which could lead to changes in how disability ratings are evaluated and benefits are distributed for certain conditions.
• There is a push to improve efficiency by automating claims processes and expanding options like community care.
• Critics of the plan have raised concerns about potential reductions in access to some benefits or delays in services, while supporters argue these changes could streamline the VA and better serve veterans.

It’s too early to say definitively what will happen, as these ideas would need significant political and public support to be implemented. For now, we encourage veterans to stay informed, engage in discussions, and share their thoughts on how the VA can best support our community.

This topic will be explored in-depth in an upcoming episode of the Prepare to Compete Podcast, where we’ll discuss what these potential changes might mean for veterans. What do you think about these discussions?

How can the VA improve to meet the needs of veterans today and in the future? Let us know in the comments!
