art lore: when michelangelo vs da vinci went head to head.

in 1504 Florence wanted to decorate their meeting hall with art, so reserved 2 large surfaces and commissioned Michelangelo and da Vinci to paint a scene from Florence history.

thing is, these 2 guys absolutely hated each other, and wanted to prove their artistic superiority. So this situation provided the perfect opportunity for competition.

Michelangelo chose to do a scene of soldiers bathing after a battle.

da Vinci chose to do a scene of an actual battle, with soldiers fighting on horseback.

In the end though, none of them finished the paintings. Michelangelo was called to rome by the pope. da vinci tried a new painting technique that didn’t work out, and seemingly lost interest.
