Ever since I was a kid, everyone around me told me I was too mature for my age. I was always talking about life, philosophy and relationships. I was always taking notes on how to be perfect. Learning from the chaos around me, about what not to do and advicing others. I thought I would make a great adult. I had all the answers.
Sometimes when we grow up in an environment where we are criticised constantly for our mistakes, punished for our shortcomings, we become fearful of our own childlike curiosities and its potentially negative consequences. My judgements about the real world were not based solely on clarity but on fear.
As a child, I internalised the idea that the only way to impress an adult is to be like them. To know, say and do the right thing, always. We have all been there, haven’t we? Pretended to be wise when we had no clue. I heard somewhere that overgrown kids make for under-developed adults. And as a real adult now, I see the truth in that statement.
Then I actually grew up, and as it turns out, nobody knows the right answers all the time. We are all figuring it out and making it up as we go. You can never be perfect in the eyes of the world. Younger Helly thought she was chasing intellect and self-discovery, but really she was just chasing freedom. Freedom to be curious and creative, to experiment and make mistakes, to fail and keep going despite it. The freedom to be misunderstood, to be an amateur and sometimes, even foolish.
I hope when you hear the new poem, you can finally let yourself be foolish and free in the ways you always dreamed to be.
