Phillip Hodge was born with the ability to compose spontaneous poetry. The lyricist has developed a career in music as the rapper Thuggizzle in San Antonio, Texas. He prides himself on rhyming “off the dome,” also known as free styling. It is the most prized skill in rapping, the ability to think of clever, intricate rhymes on the spot, often in competition with another rapper, and while in front of a crowd. But despite the wealth of talent Hodge was born with, the home life of his childhood was one of instability and neglect.
Learning How to Channel Stress and Trauma
His mother sold drugs, and he and his three sisters grew up in and out of foster care. They were made wards of the state when Hodge was 9 years old. He said his acting out led to him being placed on a number of medications. He felt pigeonholed and was on the verge of living life on the streets.

Thuggizzle’s Impact at Gary Job Corps: How One Rapper Helped Save a Campus
When Phillip Hodge—better known by his stage name Thuggizzle—arrived at Gary Job Corps in San Marcos, Texas, he was just another student with big dreams and a natural gift for freestyle rap. What nobody expected was that his talent and influence would play a pivotal role in saving the campus from shutting down.
Freestyling to Leadership
Thuggizzle quickly made his presence known by drawing large crowds during breakfast, lunch, and class breaks with his off-the-dome freestyles. Students from across campus—ages 16 to 25, many from tough and troubled backgrounds—would stop what they were doing to listen. His ability to command attention and bring people together didn’t go unnoticed.
Hope Henry, a staff leader at Gary, recognized the potential in Thuggizzle’s influence. She pulled him aside with a challenge: if he could help convince the student body to take the upcoming campus survey seriously, she would give him a platform to perform at the official Business Meetings. The stakes were high—funding for the campus depended on survey results.
A Voice for the Students
With Henry’s guidance, Thuggizzle enrolled in Leadership 1, 2, and 3 and became active in the Student Government Association (SGA). These programs helped shape him into a leader, giving him the tools to bridge the gap between students and staff.
Using his charisma and credibility, Thuggizzle persuaded students to participate in the survey with sincerity. The result: Gary Job Corps achieved a 90% or better score, securing the funding it needed to remain open.
From Business Meetings to Career Prep
As part of the deal, Thuggizzle began performing at weekly Tuesday Business Meetings. His rap performances energized the events, making them something students actually looked forward to. His presence was even recognized in the campus newspaper, further cementing his role as a leader and influencer.
Beyond the spotlight, Gary Job Corps shaped Thuggizzle’s early career path. He credits the program with helping him earn his Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credentials, as well as instilling values that continue to guide him today. Through the Career Preparation Period (CPP), Career Development Period (CDP), Career Transitional Period (CTP), and into his career, Thuggizzle embraced the daily affirmation taught at Gary:
“I will discipline myself so that no one else has to.”
A Lasting Legacy
Looking back, Thuggizzle gives full credit to Gary Job Corps for giving him the foundation to grow—not just as a musician, but as a leader. What started with freestyles in the cafeteria became a movement that helped save a campus, uplifted his peers, and launched his journey into music and leadership.
Today, as Thuggizzle continues to inspire through his music and community work, the lessons from Gary Job Corps remain a cornerstone of his story—proof that even in the most unlikely places, greatness can be nurtured and change can be made.
