Talking grainlines on woven fabric.

When starting to sew, learning correct pattern layout is vital. Grainline instructions are important and need to be followed. Knowing how fabric behaves is helpful when understanding pattern layout.

SELVAGE appears on the sides of fabric and is usually found on each side of the yardage when purchasing. Selvage to selvage is the width of fabric, or WOF. The woven yarns/threads that make up fabric, which run parallel to your selvage, are called the WARP and are the strongest. They have to be since they have the longest run when the fabric is being woven.

The yarns/threads that are woven across (WOOF, or WEFT) are not as strong. They don’t have to be since they do not have to travel as far during the construction of the yardage.

Why is this important to know, you may ask. Here is an example of why. Think of your blue jeans that are freshly washed. When putting them on, they feel a little snug at first, but will stretch after wearing for a short time and become more comfortable. This is because the weaker yarns/threads go around your body. This is a reason to cut on the correct grainline recommended by a sewing pattern. The weaker threads usually wrap around your body parts; the stronger yarns/threads go up and down, preventing the fabric from letting gravity win.

When attaching the WARP piece to a WEFT piece, you may notice one piece stretches more. Knowing this will help you manage this difference by pinning, basting, or stay stitching before stitching them together. Knowing about WARP and WEFT characteristics is helpful to know if you don’t have a selvage for reference. Pull the fabric vertically and horizontally, and you will be able to tell which pull gives the most. Pulling at an angle will stretch the most, which is the BIAS.
