🎙️ Meet The Host | James Bejin

What made you want to start this podcast?

“I enjoy people and their stories and how their passion brought them to where they are today. I also enjoy promoting and supporting local businesses. They are a vital asset to all communities.”

Why is supporting local businesses important to you?

“Supporting our local business community is vital to local economic growth and employing others in the community. It’s also been instrumental in my own company’s growth. This community in Waterford has been amazing as we operate mostly on referral business. I also love catching up with old friends being born and raised here. People I have not heard from in years reach out and I love hearing from them and catching up.”

What separates successful business owners from everyone else?

“I think to be successful you have to have drive, vision, and a lot of discipline. You have to be able to get back up and go if you fail trying something new or different. Doing the things others are not willing to do. Being consistent and delivering on the service aspect is paramount with people.”

What’s the hardest lesson business taught you?

“Well that old cliché… when the going gets tough, the tough get going. I like challenges. How do you learn if you don’t face adversity? How do you grow without reinventing yourself sometimes? Business is always changing and evolving with technology and other aspects. You have to be willing to change the narrative if something isn’t working.”

What’s one mistake that actually helped you grow?

“Growing too fast and scaling too quickly was probably a mistake I learned from. I wanted to expand operations into other states and I was not truly prepared for that. I think we all have these dreams of grandeur and that’s just the human spirit. But perfect what you have first. Make the adjustments you need before worrying about expansion. Consistency and sound processes need to be in place before entering other markets.”

What does leadership mean to you?

“Leadership is a responsibility and if done right you always have to lead by example. Being the first one into work or staying late after everyone has left for the day. Digging deep in the trenches with your team and showing them by example is leadership to me. I give a lot of decision making opportunities to my team and give them autonomy to help me make decisions. That’s leadership to me.”

What’s your vision for Built Local Podcast?

“Built Local has been a project I have always wanted to do. First and foremost I take a lot of pride in my work and am passionate about seeing others succeed. Running a small business has many challenges and if I can assist these companies and make it a bit easier through exposure to attract a client base then that drives my passion.”

What advice would you give someone scared to start?

“Taking risks can always be scary. You have to write a sound business plan. Follow your business plan and most importantly BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. Find a way to separate yourself from the average business in your industry. Innovate new services and always deliver white glove service. Build value. Price is always important but sometimes you can overcome price with service and value. Be passionate and never give up. Failure is the stepping stone to success. Enjoy the journey, stay humble, and give back to the community that supports you.”
