As part of its business diversification strategy, Coal India is actively exploring opportunities in the critical minerals sector in Chile. A delegation comprising Director (Finance) Shri Mukesh Agrawal, Director (Business Development) Shri Asheesh Kumar, along with senior management, met Ms. Abhilasha Joshi, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Chile, at the Indian Embassy in Santiago,Chile and sought her support in facilitating and expediting regulatory processes related to critical mineral mining in the country.
This initiative aims to help meet Indiaโs growing demand for lithium, copper, and other critical & rare earth minerals.
The delegation also met Mr. รlvaro Garcรญa, Minister of Economy, Development & Tourism and Minister of Energy, Government of Chile, to deliberate on collaboration and institutional support in the field of critical minerals in Chile.
Our Director (Business Development), Shri Asheesh Kumar, participated in a panel discussion on โUnlocking Critical Minerals and Rare Earth Elements Potential in Vidarbhaโ at the Advantage Vidarbha 2026 Business Conclave, Investment Summit and Expo in Nagpur.
In his address, he underscored the strategic importance of critical minerals as essential enablers of Indiaโs clean energy transition and modern economy. He noted that key sectors driving Viksit Bharatโincluding energy, infrastructure, electronics, automotive, and oil & gasโwill increasingly depend on the uninterrupted supply of critical minerals.
Shri Kumar highlighted Coal Indiaโs focus on critical minerals as a key diversification area, with active pursuits in lithium, graphite, nickel, rare earth elements, and potash in India and abroad.
He also emphasized Vidarbhaโs strong land bank and mining expertise, positioning the region to play a vital role in Indiaโs next phase of growth in critical minerals and value addition.
Senior management of WCL was also present on the occasion.
An awareness session on fuel conservation and energy efficiency was organised at our corporate headquarters in Kolkata in line with the โSakshamโ campaign launched by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The campaign aims to highlight the adverse health and environmental impacts of rising carbon footprints and encourage consumers to shift towards cleaner fuels.
The programme was organised in association with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and was attended by senior executives from our corporate headquarters along with representatives of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.
Shri Achyut Ghatak, our Director Technical, chaired a Knowledge Sharing cum Interactive Session at our corporate office, in Kolkata, focusing on R&D initiatives under the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Clean Coal Energy & Net Zero.
The session brought together our senior officers and a delegation from IIT Hyderabad, led by Prof. Saptarshi Majumdar, encouraging insightful discussions on clean coal technologies, circular economy, and sustainable energy solutions.
Director (Technical), appreciated the efforts of the IIT Hyderabad research team and emphasized the need to further strengthen industryโacademia collaboration to translate research excellence into practical, industry-ready solutions that support Indiaโs energy security. He emphasized translating academic research into scalable industry solutions, highlighting CILโIIT Hyderabad partnership as a key driver in addressing energy transition challenges while optimally leveraging domestic coal resources
Prof. Saptarshi Majumdar highlighted the immense potential of Indiaโs coal reserves and advocated the development of coal refinery infrastructure to unlock greater value from the coal value chain.
The interaction reinforced our commitment towards innovation-driven growth and a responsible transition to Net Zero.
