The Musical Technician

I am a musician and IT professional and have decided to combine my skills on this channel and make some videos of my playing and eventually to demonstrate my IT skills.

I am not an audio/visual engineer and so only my playing videos are my own recordings (sorry for any lighting or focus glitches in advance) and they are sandwiched between an introduction of the technical details of the music and audio/video/hardware used, and the production engineers details at the end.

A huge thanks goes to the guys over at SBC Digital Ltd for the channel branding and the post video production, you can find their site in the links section below.

There may be some other content posted here from time-to-time that demonstrates either audio/visual technology/techniques, programming or software engineering, particularly if its in connection with music or video production or processing/delivery of media services.

Please like and subscribe on all my videos on the channel 😊 👍

🎹 A Little Update from The Musical Technician 🎶

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share a wee personal update with you all. Over the next while I’ll be moving house, so future videos will be recorded in a brand-new space, which I’m really looking forward to. It’ll be a fresh start and I can’t wait to get everything set up and start making more of the music you’ve been enjoying here on the channel.

While the move is happening I’ve already prepared a few videos which will go out gradually over the next while, so there’ll still be new uploads to enjoy while I’m unpacking and getting the new setup ready.

It might be around January 2026 before I record the first video in the new place, but rest assured the music will keep coming.

🎵 There’s also something a bit more personal I’d like to share.

Some of you might not have known, but I actually started The Musical Technician while spending a lot of time with my mum during her illness with Alzheimer’s, caring for her as a devoted son would. The songs I play, mostly from the 1950s through the 1980s, were the kind of music she loved, and I used to record them, visit her, and play them back on my phone. She loved it too!

She always recognised the tunes and loved watching the videos. Even in her later stages, when much else was forgotten, music still reached her. Sadly, my mum passed away peacefully on 14th September 2025, aged 85, and it feels right to finally tell you that she was the heart and inspiration behind this channel.

The next three uploads on the channel form a kind of trilogy. Each one reflects a stage in our family’s journey through her illness and eventual passing, shock, sorrow and hope, and finally the love and significance she held in our lives. The titles and/or lyrics of these songs carry this meaning, and while they may seem like ordinary covers on the surface, they are a personal musical expression of our experience.

Every recording I have made carries a bit of her with it. She especially loved The Shadows, and because of that I decided to learn to play melodies on the guitar, something I’d never done before. Within six months I’d recorded one of her favourite songs, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield, which also happened to be one of the very first tunes I recorded on the Tyros back in May 2021.

For anyone going through Alzheimer’s in their family, I hope this shows how music can still reach, comfort, and connect with someone, even when words or memory fade. That has always been at the heart of this channel and what I hope to share with all of you.

So, as I move into my new home and continue making music, I’ll be thinking of her, and of all of you who listen, comment, and support what I do here. Thank you for being part of this journey.

Here’s to the new surroundings, new recordings, and the timeless power of music 🎶❤️

Whilst the Tyros version of this tune is the most popular of my Christmas videos/songs, maybe you would also like the guitar cover of this perennial favourite that I performed last year.

It's that time of year once more as we all prepare for the festive season and, for me this usually means some festive music recordings.

There will be a new Christmas tune or 2 coming soon on the channel. I hope you all have a wonderful, musical Christmas. 🎄🎁 🎅🏻 🦌 🎸🎹

For now why not watch some of my past Christmas videos, while you wait!
