Did you know that when the tide is out, the River Thames is the largest open air archaeological site in the UK! My name is Nicola White. I am a licensed Thames Mudlark. Welcome to my YouTube channel where you will discover the magic of mudlarking along the Thames and the stories behind the objects which I find. Each time the tide goes out it leaves us historical objects to find and research and you never know what you will find. John Burns, the 19th century MP described the River Thames as Liquid History. I like to think of it as giant liquid storybook full of fascinating stories from the past about people and places. Even finding a small button can take you on a wonderful journey. I'm out Roman pottery hunting today and couldn't believe my luck when I stumbled upon this fragment of Samian ware resplendent with the face of a wild boar. Maybe its part of a bowl which depicted a larger hunting scene. This fine dining ware with its moulded decoration could have graced a Roman dinner table a mere couple of thousand years ago, perhaps containing a delicious flamingo* stew (for which there is a fine recipe in Epicius's cookbook). *if flamingo is not available it can be quite simply substituted with parrot. What have you found recently?

Hi Everyone! It's the Woolwich ArtHub Open Studios this Saturday 6th June from 11am to 5pm. I'll be there all day in my studio which is on the second floor at 28 Bowater Road, Woolwich SE18 5TF. When you get to the second floor, my studio is right next to the large industrial lift! There are lots of other studios to visit too as well as family friendly ceramics activities, screen printing and badge making, a bike surfer and tea and cakes of course. I'll have some of my Thames glass fish on display as well as my ultra rarely spotted ultra violet glass fish. I focus on creating with found objects so expect to see plenty of them! I'll have a few Thames found clay tobacco pipe bowls to give away too. It will be lovely to see if you can pop in and say hi. For those of you unable to jump on a plane and come over I'll take lots of photos. Have an excellent weekend. Much love, Nicola
