This is Wilma enjoying breakfast today after giving birth a few days ago. π
Her hips and back were in late term pregnancy and she had to walk around slowly and carefully. She looked like she was uncomfortable and had back pain.
After giving birth, the skin on her waist is hanging loose and she is moving around like a free and unburdened squirrel again.
She spends ~15 minutes with me before returning to her drey instead of the typical full duration.
There are several squirrel birth videos on YouTube in general, if anyone wants to take a peek at their little world. π
For those who've been around longer, you know I've had a 2-year "no hand feeding" contract with Miss Wilma.
She had a strong instinctual fear of my hands and a very strong resolve to not hand feed, all while being perfectly content to sit on my lap.
She would chatter her teeth, stomp her feet, and flick her tail to give me a firm "nope" every time I asked her.
I gave her about 6 or more months of peace and respect, thinking that the possibility of Wilma hand feeding was over. Regardless, two of her offspring (Stomper & Winona) accepted hand feeding.
Recently, Wilma began showing initiative and curiosity - placing her nose against my hands.
Two days ago, I had a dream that I hand fed Wilma.
This led me to asking her again.
The first attempt, she chattered her teeth. How dare I? Surely I know better.
Then she stopped reacting to me asking, bypassing my hand as if it wasn't there.
Afterwards she started to glance at and sniff towards my hand, showing curiosity.
Finally, and ever so casually, she took a half opened walnut from my hand. She was very calm and certain - as if her resolve to try it was just as firm as her resolve had been to avoid it.
I hand fed her many times today, she enjoyed alternating between my hand and the treat bag. And her eyes looked just as happy as mine πβ€οΈ
My little Wilma finally overcame her fear! π₯³ππππΏοΈ
Fussy Angel became a regular visitor and she is very quick to jump up onto my hand now. She is making my wild animal bonding dreams come true by being so comfortable and trusting of me. πΏοΈβ€οΈ
My sweet Fussy Angel took a leap of faith this morning.
She put me through an audit by watching intently for over a year. And I was under the impression that I would only ever see her at a distance.
This may seem like a quick escalation of trust, but really this is the long awaited bud finally blooming after 1-2 years of careful growing deliberation on her part.
It's remarkable that she was able to do this trick after only two days. I felt ambitious to ask her because of her personality and mannerisms showing promise.
She's been an excellent communicator and gentle hand feeder. I already know her favorites are hazelnuts and pecans - hazelnuts take the top spot by a small margin.
She isn't so keen about almonds, they need to pass a strict quality test for her to take them.
Walnuts and brazil nuts are an absolute no, she may even feel offended if I try to offer after knowing that.
She loves to sit and eat peanuts to help replenish her energy from running around caching treats and chasing gray squirrels.
She knew very well that I wanted her to climb onto my hand and has been bypassing it. Today I asked her again and she spent more time considering it before deciding she was willing.
She already knows without confusion when I run out of her favorites. Usually the chipmunks and gray squirrels get confused and insist on inspection. It takes Fussy Angel about 3 seconds to understand and she simply runs off back to her home tree. πΏοΈβ¨

Fussy has been quick to hand feed π€
1. She's telling me that the almond didn't pass her quality check.
2. Fussy's most dramatic moment.
3. Little π
4. Hand in hand π«΄π
5. Trying to get her to jump up but she's too smart for that.
6. She seems to like the hazelnuts the most π
