5 THINGS EVERY TAILOR SHOULD DO BEFORE CUTTING ANY FABRIC.
One of the biggest mistakes many tailors make is rushing to cut fabric immediately after receiving it from a client.
The truth is, good cutting starts long before the scissors touch the fabric. Most fitting problems we experience during sewing can often be traced back to mistakes made before cutting.
As tailors, here are 5 important things we should do before cutting any fabric:
1. Analyze the Style Properly.
Don't just look at the picture and start cutting.
Study the design carefully. Ask yourself:
What makes this style unique?
Where are the style lines?
Is there gathering, pleating, draping, or layering involved?
What pattern pieces will be needed?
Many cutting mistakes happen because the tailor did not fully understand the style before starting.
2. Take and Confirm Accurate Measurements.
No style can fit well if the measurements are wrong.
Always double-check important measurements such as bust, waist, hip, shoulder, sleeve length, armhole, and outfit length. If a measurement looks unusual, confirm it before cutting.
A few extra minutes spent checking measurements can save you from costly alterations later.
3, Press the Fabric Before Cutting.
This step is often ignored.
Most fabrics come folded from the market and may contain wrinkles or creases. Cutting on a wrinkled fabric can affect accuracy.
Pressing the fabric helps it relax, lay flat, and gives you a more accurate cutting surface.
4. Plan Your Pattern Layout.
Before cutting, arrange all pattern pieces properly on the fabric.
Check:
Grain line direction
Fabric stretch direction
Pattern placement
Fabric economy
Good layout helps reduce fabric waste and prevents situations where you discover halfway through cutting that the fabric is no longer enough.
5. Cut with Precision and Patience.
Cutting is not a race.
Follow your markings carefully. Pay attention to curves, notches, seam allowances, necklines, armholes, and style details.
Remember: it is easier to cut fabric than to replace fabric that has been wrongly cut.
My Take as a Tutor :
Whenever I see a garment that fits beautifully, I know the secret is not just in the sewing. The real work started with understanding the style, taking accurate measurements, preparing the fabric properly, planning the layout, and then cutting with precision.
A tailor who masters these five stages will consistently produce cleaner, better-fitting, and more professional outfits.
