I added a TVS diode to the JST plug coming from my ESC to the Direct Power servo leads. This is cleaner than the add-on units that are being sold commercially.

Many people don't understand how you can get a power surge greater than the battery voltage. Power surges come from regeneration when a servo motor or wheel motor is forced to rotate - same concept as regenerative braking on hybrid and EVs. Those spikes can damage servos and other electronics and similar diodes are sold and recommended by NSDRC, Holmes Hobby and others. They aren't a 100% guarantee, but the are effective and will protect your servo to a large degree.

I lost an LP rear servo once when I accidentally left the diode off when I was rewiring. That is just one data point but I am confident that they help. Your mileage may vary.
