As a registered charity that relies primarily on donations, Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and to educating the public on wildlife-related issues. TWC is the only accredited and fully-equipped wildlife veterinary hospital in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and the sole rehabilitation centre to offer emergency rescue for wild animals in Ontario 365 days a year. Since opening in 1993, over 120,000 wild animals from over 300 species have been admitted.

A happy update to finish off your week! #FreedomFriday
You may remember this resilient red-tailed hawk… two months before the happy moment he was released, he was rushed in after Sana witnessed him crash into the TTC streetcar powerlines above her. Disoriented, he tried to fly away but slammed into a nearby window. He desperately needed help.
At Toronto Wildlife Centre, x-rays revealed a fractured leg - the Veterinary Team performed orthopedic surgery to repair it. If you missed his recovery journey, watch the life-saving work that made it possible for him to return to the wild! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZx1a...

This Saturday is #InternationalVultureAwarenessDay! These remarkable birds play a crucial role in maintaining sustainable and healthy ecosystems. One way they do this is by consuming organic waste, helping to prevent the spread of certain diseases.
But vulture populations are declining drastically worldwide due to various threats such as lead or rodenticide poisoning. TWC’s team has provided urgent care to many turkey vultures over the years - including this memorable patient who was discovered with alarmingly high levels of lead in his system. The sick bird was limping and unable to fly - and he didn’t have the strength to migrate south for the winter.
With life-saving care over several months, he was able to return to his flock in the spring! We invite you to revisit this old episode about one of these remarkable species: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLuAS...
Keep your eyes peeled for a brand new episode next Wednesday, August 27th!

Happy #WorldSnakeDay!🐍 Join us in celebrating these often misunderstood animals and recognizing their vital role in our ecosystems.
One of the most common species in Southern Ontario is the harmless garter snake. Last summer, construction workers found this one trapped in one of the many holes along the metal pole of a sign, struggling to free himself. A kind worker removed the pole from its base and brought him to Toronto Wildlife Centre. Watch the Veterinary Team work their magic to free him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGwGe...

Brown creepers! White-throated sparrows! Wood thrushes! Oh my!
Migratory birds have been making their way back to their summer grounds, but many suffer injuries along the way. Navigating through busy urban areas leaves them vulnerable to window strikes, and sadly only the lucky ones are found and given life-saving treatment.
Many survivors are rushed through TWC’s doors suffering broken bones, head trauma, eye ulcers and more - the medical team delicately cares for each one. Once fully recovered, many will venture back out to complete their migration! But before they go … take a peek inside their enclosures to check on their progress.
This World Migratory Bird Day, we’re featuring a Candid Cam episode showcasing Ontario migratory birds who are often treated at TWC. Return this Saturday, May 11th to get an up close look!
