We Love TTRPGs!

Are you ready?

I seriously love making fun of the thumbnail game. The only thing I could do is just go more ridiculous. I absolutely hate the thinking look or the surprised look or the, oh, look what we have here look. Those are all just overplayed and ridiculous. So if someone doesn't get the joke, I do not care. ‪@TrollLordGames‬

We Love TTRPGs!

You can see from the open tabs that I am near completing the Book(let) of Fear: How to Horror."

What originally started as a simple page of rough ideas turned into a complete booklet filled with everything I know about creating and running top-notch horror-themed roleplaying adventures. Everyone who donated even a dollar to the unfinished booklet on its prior upload links will be receiving the fully completed booklet! I made it “pay what you want” without any expectations of making even a dollar, but once again you surprised me. To ensure you got your money’s worth, I created this booklet, and I am so grateful for your belief and trust in me. I never would have taken on this project if not for you.

Meanwhile, I’ve created a Bandcamp account to make all of my music (from my former life as a “music-making guy”) available for free, and I’ve created a DriveThruRPG account where I’ll be making my projects available as either “pay what you want” or for a very small minimum. I created this channel to help others learn from my experience, and I plan to return shortly to continue doing exactly that.

My anti-seizure medication is working great, and I’m finally in a good state of mind to get back in front of the camera. See you soon! —Aten

(edit: If you downloaded the orchestral zip and found it empty, that's me multi tasking and not paying close enough attention. But I've corrected that error. Thanks!)

Hey, full disclosure - I'm way behind in my projects here for the channel. I was expecting to release a Castle Amber video. (it is nearly finished). Therefore until I pull myself out of this current funk I have a little gift for you. As many of you know, I was once a semi professional musician prior to my devastating injury. This is why I now have seizures. I'm seeing improvements with the new medication (I hate pharmaceutical medications but here we are) but they're also contributing to a deep depression. For sticking with me until I get back on track I'm giving you some of my past compositions. Three orchestral pieces I wrote a very long time ago as I was learning music theory. They've improved over the years as have my composition skills, the technology of samplers, and Digital Work Stations. You might find these useful for your gaming. Also I'm giving you my electronic compositions. These might be useful for space age gaming as they were inspired by my love of Jean-Michel Jarre. These songs mean a lot to me because I wrote them alone on my journey to become a better composer than I had been in previous alt rock bands. (BTW, at the moment one of my dear friends is mixing and mastering my 80s record with a band that was very 80s sounding. I'll give those to you free as well when he is done. If for no other reason that to share my first band that didn't completely suck.) Links pinned in comments below.

We Love TTRPGs!

As I lay in my hospital bed for three days, my head wired up with electrodes, I had a lot of time to think. And what I kept coming back to was how grateful I am — genuinely grateful — for this amazing community we've created here together.

Somewhere between the beeping machines and the late-night thoughts, I realized something: it’s finally time. Time for the video I’ve been putting off for years.

Castle Amber (Averoigne): The Ultimate GM Masterclass.

From the very beginning of my channel, I made a list of the greats — the adventures that changed how we play. At the top were The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, Tomb of Horrors, and of course, Castle Amber.

You’ve already seen my deep dives into Barrier Peaks and how to blend genres at your table. You’ve seen my Tharizdun video — I hope you liked it. You’ve seen me pick apart The Lost Caverns and the monsters that crawl from Iggwilv’s lair. And yes, I still owe you that full Iggwilv/Tasha episode. But Castle Amber… that’s the one I’ve been saving.

I’ve spent months digging through Clark Ashton Smith’s stories, the Malleus Maleficarum, and the twisted history of medieval France that inspired Moldvay’s vision. I’ve run the module several times, reimagining it through a psychological and historical lens — exploring faith, madness, and the corruption that can drag an entire province into the Domains of Dread.

This isn’t just a review. It’s a masterclass. You will never see Castle Amber the same way again.

If you’ve ever wondered how I run my games — how deep I go into design, subtext, and the hidden world behind every encounter — this is the one to watch. From mental illness and fanaticism to cosmic horror and moral decay, this deep dive shows how I build layers that players may never consciously notice… but feel every step of the way.

And yes, I’ll talk about what’s coming next. I’m currently running Gary Gygax’s Necropolis as the final leg of my research into Tomb of Horrors. That video will come later — and I promise, no one on YouTube will cover it with the same depth you’ll find here on We Love TTRPGs.

So, if you’ve ever wanted to see how far I go into the craft of Game Mastering — how history, literature, and myth all converge to create true horror at the table — then this is it.
Castle Amber: The Masterclass premieres soon… hopefully this week.

Prepare to enter Averoigne — and you’ll never leave it the same way again.

I'm on my way to the hospital in a few hours but I spent my day finishing this video. I hope you enjoy it.

We Love TTRPGs!

HEY!!! THIS WILL BE FINISHED!!

(I’m hoping to have this video uploaded before I’m hospitalized on Thursday and away for a while.)

Meanwhile—and when I get back—I’m going to be expanding my Fear pamphlet into a full booklet. Originally, those videos on the subject were just my own thoughts and experiences about creating fear in tabletop role-playing games. Though the videos all bombed in the algorithm, those of you who did respond positively have been amazing. Your donations and encouragement inspired me to expand my simple pdf of thought into something deeper.

During the process, I’ve started researching what past authors and game designers have said about the subject. When I return, I’ll be pulling all of that together into a full booklet— perhaps thirty pages or more tackling how to game master fear effectively, expanding on and adding information that didn't make it into my videos.

Anyone who donates to the Fear project on my itch.io —whether it’s a dollar or twenty—will receive a copy of the finished booklet, as long as I have your email address. My goal is to make this not just a guide, but an inspiration and a practical reference for horror game masters.
