DepEd Announces Indoor End-of-School Year Rites Amid El Niño Heat
In response to the persistent El Niño phenomenon, the Department of Education (DepEd) has directed public schools to move their End-of-School Year (EOSY) activities indoors. The decision aims to shield students, teachers, and participants from the severe heat.


The DepEd stated, “To ensure the safety and protection of learners, teachers, and attendees, schools are advised to hold their EOSY rites in an indoor venue with proper ventilation or covered court to avoid exposure to the sun.” This guidance comes as part of the precautions outlined in Memorandum 23-2024.


Scheduled from May 29-31, 2024, the EOSY rites are a significant event for public schools across the nation. The memorandum further advises schools to avoid conducting the rites during peak heat hours.


Additionally, the memorandum includes a financial directive: “No DepEd personnel shall be allowed to collect any kind of contributions or fee for the Graduation/Moving up Ceremony.” This clause ensures that the EOSY rites remain cost-free for students and their families, with all related expenses covered by the school’s maintenance and operational budget.


The DepEd’s proactive measures reflect a commitment to student welfare and equitable access to education, even in the face of challenging weather conditions.
