Why Ronald Karauri Left a Lucrative Career at Kenya Airways to Join Politics

Kasarani MP Captain Ronald Karauri has revealed that his decision to leave a well-paying job as a captain at Kenya Airways and venture into politics was driven by what he describes as a leadership deficit in the country.

Speaking about his journey into public service, Karauri argued that Kenya’s biggest challenge is not a lack of resources but a lack of effective leadership. According to him, many individuals occupying positions of power focus on politics rather than leadership and service delivery.

Before joining politics, Karauri built a strong corporate reputation as the Chief Executive Officer of SportPesa, where he was credited with steering the company to significant growth. He says the experience, coupled with his leadership role in the Kenya Airline Pilots Association, equipped him with the skills needed to solve problems and serve communities.

Since being elected as the Member of Parliament for Kasarani, Karauri has placed education at the centre of his development agenda. Through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), several schools, including St Dominic, Maranatha, Gwamba and Jirro Secondary School, have undergone major infrastructure upgrades. The projects include the construction of new classrooms, ablution blocks and perimeter fences aimed at improving learning conditions and enhancing security.

The legislator has also prioritized security initiatives in the constituency. New police posts have been established using NG-CDF funds to bring law enforcement services closer to residents. Karauri says local youth have been engaged in the construction projects, creating employment opportunities while helping tackle crime.

Karauri maintains that leadership is fundamentally different from politics. He describes leadership as a commitment to problem-solving, service and sacrifice, adding that public officials should focus on delivering tangible results rather than political rhetoric.

Transparency and accountability have also featured prominently in his administration. The MP has consistently emphasized public participation in project selection, competitive procurement processes and strict oversight mechanisms to ensure NG-CDF resources are utilized effectively.

Beyond government-funded initiatives, Karauri runs the Captain Karauri Foundation, which supports vulnerable learners through bursaries and provides assistance to children living with disabilities. The foundation seeks to fill gaps that cannot be addressed through NG-CDF programmes.

Looking ahead, Karauri says he hopes to be remembered for transforming the education sector in Kasarani and creating opportunities for young people. He believes education remains the greatest equalizer and the most effective tool for securing a better future for the constituency’s children.

In a glowing send-off, Ruto praised Kenya’s powerful partnership with the United Nations, highlighting the country’s unique status as host of the only UN headquarters in Africa and the Global South.

Kenya—home to United Nations Environment Programme and UN-Habitat—continues to punch above its weight on the global stage, from peacekeeping missions to climate action and pushing for Security Council reforms.
