Lucky Dube has been hailed as ‘The shining star of African reggae (afropop.com) and ‘South Africa’s biggest-selling contemporary artist’ (Mail & Guardian).
He was a modern-day hero with a message that touched millions of people’s hearts around the world. With an incredible 22 albums under his musical belt, he proved himself one of not only South Africa’s, but also the world’s greatest reggae superstars.
His songs were based on three main things - political issues, social issues and personal issues - things that play an important role in everyone’s lives.
From the release of his first reggae album in 1985 to his present superstar status today, Lucky maintained the humble nature that brought him closer to the people that so inspired his music. He toured the world more times over than anyone could dream of and shared stages with names such as Maxi Priest, Sinead O-Connor, Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson, Seal, Ziggy Marley, Celine Dion, Sting and many, many others.

Our hearts are heavy as we remember how cruelly Lucky was taken from us, far, far too soon.
As always we give thanks for what he left us: beautiful, powerful and rousing music that gave Africa a presence on the global stage that has not dimmed since that terrible day in 2007.
We miss you Lucky.
We will never forget you. ❤️ #luckydube

Monday greetings to our amazing community out there
Did you know that yesterday was World Teachers’ Day?
It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.
Lucky believed with his whole heart in the power of education – and this week we are channelling that fundamental belief of his and giving thanks to all of the teachers everywhere in the world.

Today is Band Shirt Day and we’re loving the idea of this global fundraising initiative which sees artists come together for a single day to sell merchandise on their official sales channels and donate proceeds to charitable organisations of their choice.
Does anyone in our community have a Lucky shirt? Would any of you want one? Should we explore ways of doing this?
While you think about this, here’s a great photo of Lucky in a Bob Marley tee – a legend wearing a legend!

💭Why are we taking this trip down memory lane?
Well this week saw the annual celebration of International Literacy Day by UNESCO and it reminded us of the importance Lucky attached to this basic human right, from early on ❤️

In August 1991 Lucky had turned 27 and had recorded House of Exile, which gave us some of our most loved Lucky Dube songs ever!
It is no suprise, then, that this @bona_mag cover story stated that he was set to conquer the world - and conquer it he did! #fromthearchives #luckydube

Yesterday was Independence Day in Jamaica and it always warms our hearts that this important day in the Jamaican calendar happens just a few days after Lucky’s birthday. In fact Lucky was born just two years after Jamacia gained its independence in 1962, putting him always beautifully in step with the country where reggae music originated. ❤️🇯🇲 #luckydube #reggae #reggaemusic #jamaicanindependence

Lucky would have been 61 today.
The truth is that marking his birthday never gets easier because a piece of our heart is missing and it will never return.
But we take comfort in how Lucky lives on - through his music, and through each and every one of you who helps keep his legacy alive, by keeping listening and watching and following.
Happy birthday Lucky!

Back in 1987, Lucky released Slave, an album that contained many of the lyrical themes that he would continue to write about for the rest of his career.
One of these was calling out those who “have” for not caring enough about their fellow humans who might be struggling to even find food to eat.
You can hear the sincerity of this message in “The Hand That Giveth” and feel, in the lyrical music and stripped down production, Lucky’s heartfelt desire for everyone to live #TogetherAsOne.
“What type of rich man are you
Who doesn't care about the poor people?
What type of rich man are you
Who doesn't care about helpless people?”
