Day 5: Examples and Explanations.
A quick run-through of today's Task and learning points. You'll learn 3 ways of extending and supporting your main points for IELTS Task 2. The question we're using to practise today is:
'Some people say that educational qualifications are the key to a successful life. Others say that they are not necessary'. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
After you've watched the 3 videos about Conditionals, I would like you to use any conditional sentence to describe a problem/solution that you know about and its EFFECTS (review from yesterday).
Here are some examples about COVID that you can adapt.
Notice that the difference between 1st and 2nd depends on whether you think the outcome is POSSIBLE (1st) or UNLIKELY (2nd). If it happened in the past and is too late to change it is IMPOSSIBLE (3RD).
Please post your comments here and I will review them.
You can use any Task 2 question and or the one from yesterday if you want to (e.g. If the government does not restrict the flow of people to the city.....If people continue to migrate in large numbers...If more investment was/were made in rural areas....If there were more incentives to encourage people to stay in rural areas...).
Can you see what needs to be changed in these ‘hi and goodbye’ sentences?
If you’re not sure, check out my 10 Golden Rules of Informal Letters on my website:
ieltsetc.com/how-to-write-a-formal-or-informal-let… - I am thinking about you from the day I left your place as I am totally overwhelmed with your hospitality and care. - It was so great to meet you last time, we haven’t seen for ages! - Hope this letter finds you in radiant health and best of spirits. - First of all I would like to thank you for your generosity and the hospitality you have provided in your home in Sydney during my stay for a business seminar for Ten Days. - How have you been since we last met during my visit to Australia to attend a two-day business seminar? - I am thankful for the warm reception I received when I stayed at your place last month for the seminar. - I hope this letter finds you in good health and jovial spirit. - So I sincerely request you to send it back through FedEx or BlueDart International courier service to my hometown which I think will not be that much burden to you. - Please let me know if you require any further information. - Send them by post as I need them urgently two days after the meeting.
Today we're reviewing my golden rules and then looking at your examples (lots of them!)
Look at my list of 'dos and don'ts'. Which ones are 'do' and which ones are 'don't'? See you in 20 minutes!
1. Paraphrase the question. 2. Put your opinion in the first line. 3. Use templates. e.g ‘I will assess both views and give my opinion at the end’. 4. Use cliches like ‘there are 2 sides to every coin’. 5. Give your opinion e.g ‘People should save their money for their retirement’ 6. Use emotional language like ‘joyful’ and ‘horrible’. 7. Generalise e.g. ‘People always save their money for their retirement’. 8. Use phrases like this to sound formal: e.g. Globally there are many ideas from people all over the world.
Hi everyone. At 2 pm we'll be quickly reviewing some Task 1 grammar, and then moving on to Task 2 brainstorming. Hope to see you there!
Before the lesson, have a quick look at these 3 common errors and try to fix them: We'll be quickly reviewing some grammar items: 1) Which prepositions to use? People consumed more added sugar on* snacks. 2) How to use ‘twice as much’? Americans eat sodium twice* as compared to added sugar and 37% of fat. 3) How to add data? The percentage of fats consumed at dinnertime is twice as much as the percentage consumed at breakfast * 37% and 16% respectively.
Here's the Task 2 we'll be discussing: In some cultures, older people after retirement spend their money on enjoying themselves (e.g going on holiday) rather than saving money for their children. Do you think it is positive or negative?

Hello
I got so many responses to last week's task that I had to close the form and I haven't had time to mark them all, sorry.
So I've taken 10 first lines/last lines that I think will help everyone see the problems with a letter of request to a friend.
Please look at the examples, comment and we'll discuss them live at 2pm.

Sorry this is a bit short notice! Have you got time to submit a paragraph?
At 3pm today we'll be doing 2 things:
1) One paragraph from Tuesday's essay: submit your paragraph here and I will review it and look at coherence/cohesion:
forms.gle/neWwkNduhRvFZJsd6
If you need to review coherence and cohesion (one of the Band Descriptors) check out my 10-minute lesson and video here:
ieltsetc.com/2020/01/ielts-writing-coherence-cohes…
2) A new topic - GT Task 1 I think!
See you later I hope,
Best wishes

Hi everyone and really sorry for the delay. Hope you're all doing well.
Hopefully everything will be ok for 15.00 and we're going to do an Academic Task 1 as posted by Niloofar last week.

Quick question - look at the pie charts (in the thumbnail or on the Facebook page). What tense should you use to describe them?
