Our goal is teach how to be more self sufficient even on the smallest of acreage! Gardening and homesteading on 1/2 acre in the Southern part of Utah where we raised our two children, grow our own organic food, raise chickens, dairy goats, ducks and turkeys. On this small one half acre we have been able to become largely (80%) self sufficient, run a CSA, operate a small organic nursery and garden supply, and offer learning through the classes we teach here at our little farm. We have 48 fruit trees, dozens of grape vines and berries, plus other edibles through the 1/2 acre. Our YouTube channel is devoted to share and teach our love for all these beautiful life skills that are being lost. Join us on the journey!

This is a busy time of year in the garden and if we don’t take a pause and see those hidden gems, we’ll miss them! Slow down and enjoy even a few minutes a day in the garden just observing.

This past month I’ve felt a little overwhelmed with all the unfinished projects and the last few days we have been able to get to a few of them. Our pig shelter needed its roof finished and Kevin finally had a day to do that. It’s been cover with a piece of plywood, a tarp and a bag of cement that got left out in the rain for a weight to hold the plywood down in the wind. Ya do what ya do to get by… and sometimes it’s months!
The shelter is made out of an old corrugated culvert we got from my sons work that Kevin cut a hole in for entry and the roof he cut out of sheet metal, spot welded and soldiered for water proofing. We wanted it to look like a mini silo. What do you think? I think it turned out pretty awesome. I was finally able to shear my two angoras. Getting things done!

Guess what video is coming this May???? One that has been asked for the most. A complete overview of our 1/2 acre homestead. We will include our gardens, orchard, animal housing, hay barn, chicken coop, pig pin, our farm store/nursery and hows it's all placed. And yes, the house is on this property as well! We hope you will enjoy it. Please feel free to list things you would like to see in this video and I will do my best to get in what I can. This will be outside placement only. Our cellar and other inside things will be at a later date.
I want to thank you all for your continued support. Looking forward to a productive growing season for us all. God bless. 🥰

It’s amazing to me how a stroll through the gardens can brighten my day. This past few weeks have been heavy on the heart and seeing things bloom and the garden green up helps me remember Gods creations are for us to enjoy and give us peace and give us hope.

This has been a hard and stressful week and our video planned couldn't get finished, but we will post one we filmed a few months back first thing in the morning. Not our regular style, but plenty of information on How to Save Money by Growing a Garden. Just a little information of what has been going on. My oldest brother has had cancer and has been in heart failure and has progressively gotten worse this week. We don't know what the outcome will be, but we have been spending much time with him. Thank you for you kindness and support. Maybe soon I will share a video of him and his amazing talents. You would all be amazed. THE most talented man I've ever known.

I LOVE easy perennials that really work in our desert climate.
Lenten Rose also known as Hellebores bloom early February in our zone 8a. Hellebores thrive best in temperate climates, particularly within USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9. They prefer rich, well-draining soil that's high in organic matter, ideally with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. For optimal growth, plant them in areas that receive partial to full shade, which protects them from the harsh midday sun and helps maintain steady moisture levels. Regular watering is beneficial during dry spells, though it's important to avoid waterlogging the roots. Once established, hellebores are relatively low-maintenance, requiring only occasional feeding with a balanced fertilizer in early spring and a layer of mulch during colder months to help moderate soil temperature and moisture.
