History With Hilbert

Hello everyone, my name's Hilbert and I make videos about (mostly) history, hence the name.Which period of history and which aspect of location can vary greatly, from the Picts of 6th Century Scotland to the Peaky Blinders of 1920's Birmingham, although you can be sure that whichever time period I am talking about, it will include some (mostly useless) language and etymological trivia as well as the national anthem of the Netherlands. Do not question this; it is essential to being a good historian.

The best "About" section you can find on me and not written by me are my videos, so if you want to learn more about me why not watch them? If you still want to learn more then consider jumping into my private life on Vlogs in Clogs, or following my various social media accounts like Facebook or Twitter, and if you want to pay me to ramble about history and languages and sitting in my room fantasising about windmills; you now can thanks to popular demand by becoming a patron on Patreon. Ta!

Due to still having some bits to add and some filming to do, tonight's video on SCOTTISH GAELIC IN NEW ZEALAND will be postponed to tomorrow evening. I think you'll really enjoy it so it will be worth the wait.

On my second channel, Frisian with Hilbert, I just made a video about what happened to Frisia between 1500-1800, the loss of independence, the suspension of Frisian as an official language, and the determination of Frisians to keep it alive. Check it out!

History With Hilbert

Saddened to hear of the passing of Max Wolff at the age of 99, the last Dutch veteran who landed in Normandy as part of the support for the D-Day landings. Of Jewish descent, Wolff escaped the Nazi Invasion of the Netherlands, eventually making his way through Belgium into France and England. He joined the Princess Irene Brigade, Dutch volunteer fighters in exile and helped to liberate his country throughout 1944 and 1945.

Just last year he attended the 80th anniversary commemorations at D-Day. It’s thanks to people like Max that we may enjoy the freedoms we take for granted today. Despite being a refugee and on the run, he risked his life to liberate not only his own countrymen but countless others.

May he rest in peace.

For more about Max’s story, and those of other Dutchmen during D-Day, check out my video from the anniversary last year.
