Welcome to The Catholic Psychotherapist.
My name is Greg Nolan, and this channel explores the human person through the lens of psychology, philosophy, and the Catholic faith.
Many people today struggle with anxiety, confusion, and a sense that something in modern life has become disconnected from deeper truths about the human person. Modern psychology often approaches these problems in a purely material way, but the Christian tradition offers a much richer understanding of the human soul.
On this channel I reflect on the inner life — our struggles, desires, habits, and wounds — and how they can be understood in the light of the Catholic understanding of the person.
My hope is that these reflections help people understand themselves more deeply and move toward genuine healing.
For those who would like to support the work, I write a monthly Patron Reflection on Patreon exploring these themes in greater depth:

The Catholic Psychotherapist
I’ve just published my latest monthly reflection on Patreon:
“Depression and the Dark Night of the Soul”
In it, I explore the important distinction between psychological depression and what St. John of the Cross describes as the “dark night.” Although the two can overlap, they are not the same thing, and confusing them can sometimes be spiritually and psychologically unhelpful.
This is a subject very close to my heart, both personally and professionally, and one that comes up often in my work.
You can read the reflection here:

Thank you again to those who continue to support my work. Please keep me in your prayers, and know that you remain in mine.

I've just published my second monthly reflection on Patreon.
This month, I explore the relationship between mental health and sanctity—particularly the idea that struggling mentally does not mean you are failing God.

The Catholic Psychotherapist
I’ve just written the first Patron Reflection on Patreon:
“Why I Became a Catholic Psychotherapist.”
In it I share something of my journey from working within the NHS to working independently as a Catholic psychotherapist, and why integrating the Catholic understanding of the human person into psychology became so important to me.

On the feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas, I want to acknowledge his lasting influence on my work.
St. Thomas held together faith and reason, soul and body, truth and compassion.
That balance continues to guide how I think about the human person in psychology and psychotherapy.
A gift to the Church, and to the world.
