"In the schools highlighted by Ms. Yamazaki, both films ("The Making of a Japanese" and "Koshien: Japan's Field of Dreams"] show what can at times seem like an almost militaristic devotion to order, teamwork and self-sacrifice. But the documentaries also portray teachers and coaches trying to preserve the best of Japanese culture while acknowledging that certain traditions might damage the participants." www.nytimes.com/2024/04/05/world/asia/japan-docume…

"As a mixed-race person growing up in Japan, I had many reservations about the Japanese way. In “the nail that sticks out gets hammered down” society, I was often that nail, and sometimes I felt suffocated by the rigid rules of society. When I was 19, I moved to New York to study film and begin my career as a documentary director. Unexpectedly, while I learned so many valuable things in America, I also gained a deeper appreciation for Japan - trains running on time, people patiently lining up, avoiding wastefulness, being considerate, and a sense of personal responsibility. These traits, learned from a young age, are so normal in Japan that they are taken for granted." Watch director @emaryanyamazaki6245's film, The Making of a Japanese, to understand how Japanese students become part of greater society as they grow up. Watch now ⬇️
