Two Women Accused Of Raping Kidnapped Male Driver In South Africa

September 15, 2026 — The South African Police Service (SAPS) said in a statement posted on its X handle on Sunday that the suspects allegedly held the driver for ransom after abducting him.

“Steenberg police rescued a 25-year-old e-hailing driver after he was raped and held at ransom by two female suspects and three males yesterday,” the statement said.

Police said the victim’s brother contacted authorities after the suspects allegedly demanded R4,000 for his release.

“They located the victim through his vehicle tracker and found him at Southampton Road in Heathfield,” the statement added.

According to police, the victim had met one of the female suspects through his e-hailing business the previous week, after which they exchanged contact details and arranged to meet.

“They exchanged numbers and communicated throughout the week and eventually made arrangements to meet today.

“When he went to meet her, he was kidnapped by the suspects and the females raped him,” police said.

The suspects comprise two women, aged 23 and 34, and three males aged 16, 42 and 48.

Police said all five suspects were arrested and are expected to appear before the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 14.

Sudan’s Aid Lifeline Could Collapse Within Weeks, UN Warns

September 14, 2026 — An estimated 8.6 million people remain internally displaced across Sudan.

Sudan’s humanitarian aid system is on the brink of collapse, with the United Nations warning that emergency relief supplies could run out within weeks.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said ongoing fighting, massive displacement, heavy rains and severe flooding are putting Sudan’s already overstretched humanitarian network under unprecedented pressure.

The agency warned on Monday that the country’s emergency relief supply system could face an “imminent end” unless urgent funding is secured.
“The entire humanitarian system could collapse within weeks if we don’t act now,” IOM Director General Amy Pope said in a statement.

She warned that without new funding, humanitarian agencies may no longer be able to deliver essential assistance to people in desperate need.

“We simply can’t turn our back on the people of Sudan when they need us most,” Pope said, pointing to the combined impact of the ongoing conflict, rising displacement and heavy rains.
The warning comes as Sudan continues to face one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

Fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023, has killed more than 200,000 people, according to estimates cited by aid workers.

The conflict has also displaced millions and intensified hunger across the country, while international humanitarian funding has fallen sharply.

The IOM said shelter materials and other emergency relief supplies could be depleted by the end of September if additional donor support does not arrive.

The warehouses and logistics network supporting the humanitarian pipeline can currently maintain operations only until the end of the year, adding further pressure to an already fragile relief system.

An estimated 8.6 million people remain internally displaced across Sudan.

Many are facing repeated displacement as violence continues, while heavy rains and flooding have destroyed shelters and forced vulnerable communities to move again.

Despite the growing challenges, the IOM said its humanitarian network — involving nearly 100 national and international NGOs — has provided assistance to approximately 2.8 million people since July 2023.

But with funding declining while humanitarian needs continue to rise, the organization says its ability to reach people is rapidly shrinking.

For millions of Sudanese already struggling with war, hunger and displacement, the loss of this humanitarian lifeline could trigger an even deeper crisis.

GERD Output Surpasses Design Estimates by 17% in First Year

September 14, 2026 — The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) generated approximately 17 percent more electricity than its initial long-term annual estimates during its first year of operation, according to a statement released by the GERD International Collaborative Consortium (GICC).

Marking the landmark facility’s first anniversary, the consortium called for accelerated grid investments to ensure the dam’s power directly reaches local households and industries.

Citing Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) data, GICC reported that Ethiopia generated 35,671 GWh of electricity during the 2025/26 fiscal period, with GERD accounting for 51.5 percent of total national output.

The consortium attributed the higher-than-expected output to favorable hydrological conditions and efficient resource management.

Inaugurated on September 9, 2025, as Africa’s largest hydroelectric installation, GERD quickly established itself as the core driver of Ethiopia’s power sector. In its first year, the mega-project also boosted Ethiopia’s standing in regional energy markets, supplying approximately 2,500 GWh in electricity exports to neighboring Kenya, Djibouti, and Sudan.

However, GICC emphasized that expanding generation capacity alone cannot solve the nation’s energy challenges without parallel investments in grid distribution.

The consortium highlighted World Bank data indicating a 56.6 percent national electrification rate in 2024, alongside a 2025 Multi-Tier Framework survey placing basic electricity access at just 44 percent.

“Generation capacity alone does not guarantee reliable and affordable electricity for all,” GICC noted in its anniversary release.

To bridge this gap, the network urged policymakers to prioritize domestic grid expansion, suggesting that revenues from power exports be funneled directly into local distribution infrastructure.

Additionally, GICC argued that allocating energy to job-creating local industries would deliver far greater long-term economic returns than selling power to capital-intensive, low-labor sectors such as cryptocurrency mining.

Efforts to bolster the transmission network are already underway. GICC pointed to a $400 million agreement signed in February 2026 between the Ethiopian government and Gridworks to build two privately financed transmission lines aimed at strengthening the domestic grid and expanding interconnection with Djibouti.

Beyond national infrastructure, the consortium called on Nile Basin nations to implement the Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) to advance regional benefit-sharing. Unlike rigid water-allocation models, the CFA establishes a legal framework for integrated management, conservation, and sustainable utilization of the basin’s shared water resources.

As GERD begins its second year of operations, GICC concluded that the dam’s ultimate legacy will depend not just on total megawatt production or export revenues, but on its ability to deliver tangible, reliable electricity to Ethiopian communities nationwide.

GICC is an independent network of civic and professional groups based in Ethiopia, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Norway dedicated to supporting GERD and equitable Nile water management.

Ethiopia Remains Russia’s Reliable Partner in Africa, Says Putin

September 14/2026 — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Abiy expressed appreciation for Russia’s support for Ethiopia’s BRICS membership, noting that relations between the two countries have gained significant momentum in defense, trade, investment, and education.

President Putin described Ethiopia as a long-standing and reliable partner for Russia in Africa.

Putin also congratulated Prime Minister Abiy and the Ethiopian people on the 2019 Ethiopian New Year and welcomed Ethiopia’s full entry into BRICS during Russia’s chairmanship.

According to Putin, bilateral trade tripled in 2025, while more than 20,000 Ethiopian students have completed their education in Russia—creating a strong foundation for future cooperation.

President Putin also invited Prime Minister Abiy to attend the 3rd Russia–Africa Summit, scheduled for October 28–29 in Moscow.

Ethiopian Athlete Likina Amebaw Wins 5,000m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship

September 13, 2026 — Ethiopian athlete Likina Amebaw has won the women’s 5,000m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, held today in Budapest, Hungary.

Likina pulled away from her competitors at a high pace and crossed the finish line in 14:30.36 to claim victory.

Australia’s Jess Hull, who set a new personal best of 14:32.39, finished more than two seconds behind Likina.

Another Ethiopian athlete, Fantaye Belayneh, finished third with a time of 14:32.62. Fellow Ethiopians Freweyni Hailu and Alleshiny Bawuqee followed in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Likina Amebaw also won the 5,000m at the Diamond League meeting in Rome earlier this week.

WHO Director-General Dr Tewdros Adhanom hails BRICS health commitments at New Delhi Summit

September 13, 2026 — World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the warm welcome at the 18th BRICS Summit, held in New Delhi under India's 2026 chairship.

In a post on X, Tedros thanked Modi for the reception at the "2026 #BRICS Delhi Summit," expressing appreciation for BRICS leaders' strong backing of the WHO and of multilateralism more broadly.

He welcomed the bloc's commitments to strengthening global health cooperation and delivering "Health For All," as set out in the New Delhi Declaration. The declaration, adopted at the summit, endorsed deeper cooperation on global health initiatives and reaffirmed a commitment to advancing universal health coverage through resilient, inclusive and people-centred approaches.

Tedros's statement pointed to several health-related outcomes in the declaration, including the conclusion of talks on the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing Annex to the Pandemic Agreement, efforts to end tuberculosis, strengthening the global health workforce, expanding digital health, and integrating traditional medicine into health systems.

His visit came as BRICS leaders, building on the 16th BRICS Health Ministers' Meeting held in Chandigarh in July, identified tuberculosis as a major global public health challenge requiring coordinated action and sustained investment in research.

The 18th BRICS Summit is being held under India's fourth chairship of the grouping, with the current bloc comprising 11 members: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE.
