**India's Strengthening Trade Relationship with Bangladesh: A Growing Textile Hub**
India exports $2.4 billion worth of cotton to Bangladesh, a nation emerging as a global textile center. Ministry of Commerce data reveals that Bangladesh's share in India's cotton exports doubled from 16.8% in FY13 to 34.9% in FY24. Bangladesh was the top destination for Indian cotton exports in FY24, surpassing China significantly. Raw cotton exports represented a quarter of India's total exports to Bangladesh in FY24.
The two primary commodities driving India's exports to Bangladesh are cotton and fuel, each accounting for a fifth of India's total exports. In FY24, India exported $11 billion worth of products to Bangladesh, constituting 2.5% of its total exports—up from 1.7% in FY13.
While the crisis in Bangladesh poses risks to India's trade, proactive measures and regional cooperation can mitigate these impacts, ensuring continued economic stability and growth. A balanced approach is needed, considering geopolitical and economic factors.
India's main exports include vegetables, coffee, tea, spices, sugar, refined petroleum oil, chemicals, cotton, iron and steel, and vehicles, while imports comprise fish, plastic, leather, and apparel. India's exports to Bangladesh are highly diversified across agriculture, textiles, machinery, electronics, auto parts, iron and steel, electricity, and plastics. However, most exports to Bangladesh are subject to full tariffs and fall outside the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement.
Conversely, Bangladesh's exports to India are concentrated in textiles, garments, and made-ups, accounting for 56% of their exports, benefitting from zero tariffs under the SAFTA agreement extended by India.
