In 2012, while waiting to release my first full-length album Paradise, I dropped a mixtape called Angels & Gentlemen. It consisted of select covers and reimagined versions of songs I liked. Now, while I wait for the release of my comeback project (mixing, deal memos, all the tedious shit..) I’ve decided to do it again. I’m having a good time cutting covers in my home studio so I thought I’d share them as another little mixtape series: ANGELS & GENTLEMEN VOL II. I’ll be dropping them in real time as I record them. The first instalment, DIE TRYING is up now.
“Summer Evening” within the making of the new album. A personal favourite and a song that I wrote quite quickly on a guitar in a blur of imagery and feeling. It talks about how you can share an evening with someone and in the blink of an eye, everything can change. Then Adrian Cota turned it into a scintillating yet understated production full of warm brass, Hawaiian guitars, and crispy percussion. Composing this album side-by-side with my best friend and young maestro Adrian Cota was unreal. We worked from noon to midnight for 8 days and this project is the result. Flow was real.
The album is out Friday. It’s full of surf, folk, rock, acoustic & melodic pop tones. All the sonic scapes I dig most blended together into a sound I’m proud to say is mine. Here is a look at “Heroine”. Pre-save here: orcd.co/codysimpson
