The Random Professor

"Specialization is for insects" (Robert Heinlein). While most of these videos relate to college-level and pre-service mathematics, you'll find videos on other topics as well.

If you're looking to learn mathematics, then it is my objective and completely unbiased opinion that these are the best video lectures available anywhere: trust me, I'm on the internet.

But learning mathematics takes a little more than just watching videos. It's like becoming a tennis player. You can watch all the videos you want on how to throw a touchdown, but sooner or later you have to jump into the water. I've put together the videos in a self-directed study site; you can find more information about it at:

For all my 6 fans:

In 2024, I set myself a goal of publishing 1 video a "day" (loosely defined, but roughly Monday through Thursday, minus major holidays).

Since January 3, 2024, I've published about 450 videos all together, on computer science, discrete math, graph theory, probability and statistics, and proofs.

But all good this must end. This also applies to my daily video output.

Part of the reason is that I've branched out, and am now doing comedy on a somewhat regular basis. In January, I started to post these once a week, then later twice a week. This is a more sustainable pace (and I have a long backlog that should keep me going for awhile).

I'll continue to post math videos as I make them, but at a slower pace. There are still some probability/statistics videos I want to make, and some history of mathematics videos, and there's a second actuarial exam to prepare for...

Coming soon:

November is Jokevember (which grew out of NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writer's Month). This can take several forms, but the one I participated in posted a prompt a day as a starting point. You didn't have to follow the prompt; that was only if you needed a starting point.

I'm on track to write about 30,000 words during the month. Sturgeon's Law applies: most of what I wrote was garbage. But there's some good material here, so over the next few months, you'll see some good material. Some of it might even be mine.

In the "life is chaos" category:

I've been preparing for the actuarial exam, and part of my process is learning how to teach the material, and part of THAT process is preparing the videos on the topics. So for the past few months, I've been publishing probability/statistics videos.

But I'm still a full-time faculty member, and my Chair had this insane idea of having me teach our proofs course. (I can say things about that, as I have a good relationship with my Chair, as we share the same body...). What it means is that I'm going to be adding some videos on proofs, logic, and things like that. As always, the end goal is to have a "complete" playlist for lower level undergraduate mathematics, so that anyone who wants to become a math major can get a good start on the basics.

A few quick notes for all my fans (all six of you...): I'll continue to post number theory videos as I make them, but I'm also rounding off a few more "liberal arts" math videos.

In addition, I've decided it's time to take the actuarial exam, so I'll start switching to more probability-related videos soon.

(But don't worry...the comedy clips will keep coming, just in case the math thing doesn't work out...)

I'll be taking a short break from the "number theory" videos next week to post some videos for a liberal arts math-type class I'm teaching in the fall. The number theory videos will resume the week after (and I'll continue to post comedy clips)

One of the things I plan to start doing is getting some of my comedy clips online. But for [reasons], I'd rather not do this on YouTube, and I prefer to keep my Facebook account separate. So I'm on Bluesky:

I have a few projects lined up for this year, so I'll be pivoting between a few subjects to live up to the "random" part of my name...

I'm gearing up for a few more projects. What do you want to see:

For [reasons], I have to make some videos covering more elementary topics.

The graph theory videos will continue in mid-June, where we'll start talking about spectral graph theory.

(But if you want a refresher on exponents or percentages, or if you really want to understand all those rules that you use, check out the new videos!)
