Whether you’ve been here for years or only a few days, thank you for your support. I’ve taken a short break over the past few weeks to reflect on the direction of this channel. I’ve been posting on YouTube for more than 13 years now, and as I’ve gotten older, my vision for what I want this space to be has changed.

I started as a kid making goofy DIY videos in my bedroom, then shifted into how‑to content, then product reviews, and eventually into what you see today. Through all those phases, one thing has stayed constant: my love for gear. Knives, wallets, watches, flashlights—you name it. Gear has always been the spark behind my ideas.

Long‑time subscribers will remember me as “ZSBvids,” a name I used for over a decade. About a year ago, I changed it to “ZSB EDC” because it felt more aligned with my passion for everyday carry. A few months later, for personal reasons, I changed it again to “Zak Barry [EDC].” I’ve always included my name in my online identity because I wanted this channel to feel personal.

But after a lot of reflection about the future, I realized I need to remove my name from the brand. My long‑term goal is to build something bigger than myself—a brand and a community of people who share the same love for gear. I want to create something people are excited to be part of, something that can grow beyond YouTube into merch, shirts, hats, stickers, and more. To get there, I felt a change was necessary. While my name has been a big part of my online presence, it’s not something I see people wanting to wear on a shirt or hat.

So after a lot of thought, I’m excited to introduce my new channel and brand name: The EDC Collective. This name captures exactly what I want this to become. “EDC” is a broad umbrella that covers so much, and “Collective” represents a group of people—makers, creators, artists, gear lovers—coming together around a shared passion. The possibilities truly are endless.

Now, about the logo. I chose the pirate theme because of one of my favorite quotes from Forrest Gump: “My mama always said there’s an awful lot you can tell about a person by their shoes; where they’re going, where they’ve been.” For me, the “shoes” are EDC gear. Gear tells a story. A knife carried by a WWII veteran, a watch worn by an airline pilot—every piece has a history and a journey behind it.

And honestly, I think everyone had a pirate phase as a kid. Maybe you played pirates in the backyard, dressed up for Halloween, loved Captain Jack Sparrow, or rode Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland. Pirates have always represented adventure, treasure, and that child‑like sense of wonder. That feeling is a big part of why I chose this theme for the logo and brand.

I’m excited for this new chapter, to see where this community goes, and to watch this brand grow. I hope you’ll stick around for the ride. Cheers!
