The biggest need in investing isn’t higher returns. It’s certainty.

For nearly a decade, I’ve been advocating for the introduction of Life Cycle Funds in India.

Imagine your child is born today. You know they’ll need money for college in 18 years. The biggest risk isn’t the journey. It’s a market crash just before the goal arrives.

A Life Cycle Fund is an open-ended mutual fund with a predefined target maturity of 5 to 30 years. It follows an automatic glide path, gradually shifting the portfolio from growth-oriented assets to safer ones as the maturity date approaches.

Instead of asking investors to rebalance every few years, the fund does it for them.

How the glide path works:

• Early years: Higher allocation to Equity, up to 95%, for long-term growth.
• Mid journey: Equity gradually reduces while Debt allocation increases.
• Final years: The portfolio becomes significantly more conservative, with exposure to Debt, Gold & Silver ETFs, InvITs and limited equity.

The idea is simple: take more risk when time is on your side, and less risk when your goal is near.

This structure can be particularly useful for:

• Children’s education
• Retirement planning
• Wealth transfer
• Goal-based investing

Sometimes, innovation isn’t about creating a new asset class. It’s about creating a better investing journey.
