Many astrological texts give retrogrades a negative connotation, suggesting delays or blocks. While this can manifest, but my own perspective has evolved to view them as profound indicators of karmic imprints and intense self-questioning. When I first encountered this topic, my teacher presented an intriguing perspective, one I have since observed over time and again in hundreds of natal charts.
His core idea was that, the person born with multiple retrograde planets often exhibit precocious talent in the areas governed by that planet a natural ability even from a young age. Yet, this initial brilliance may later face friction or fall short of its potential. however, is that retrograde motion signifying a second chance or offer multiple opportunities (second, third, or even fourth) later in life to master and integrate that planetary energy. The retrograde phase means the planet is three times closer to Earth than when it is direct. This proximity intensifies its impact on the individual's life, demanding an unusual degree of preoccupation with its themes. In Vedic Astrology, a retrograde planet is often seen as having immense power and depth. The planet is at its brightest during this time, which is interpreted as a source of strength and greater focus on its issues.
So The Purpose of Repetition is when A retrograde planet essentially indicates a continuation a carrying forward of an uncompleted mission or lesson from a previous existence. We do not repeat themes in a new lifetime unless there is unfinished business. The retrograde force compels you to complete, revive, or correct a pattern. So A person with many retrograde planets is often completing a segment of their life where they were interrupted or passed away before the work was done. For instance, a retrograde Jupiter might indicate a desire to complete a significant mission or because that was abandoned prematurely.
It is also important to focus on the five personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) when considering this dynamic, as the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are retrograde for such long periods that their motion is a more generational influence.
Speaking of Retrograde and karma the natal retrograde planet says that the soul that is already deeply conditioned in that are through past-life experiences or formative early-childhood influences. The challenge, and the gift, is a lifetime devoted to introspection. So in this incarnation you are compelled to study, research, and question the planet's function extensively, so it will lead you to a profound, internalized understanding. This process may initially be expressed externally as shyness, hesitation, or difficulty in initiating the planet's action.
In more spiritually developed individuals, retrograde planets are often associated with psychic abilities and gifts that were cultivated in previous lifetimes. Let's take a look on Nostradamus natal chart ,the renowned French Astrologer, who was born with all four personal planets retrograde. This configuration speaks to profound introspective abilities, a sense of being inherently different from the outside world, and an exceptional life story marked by an intense focus on an incomplete mission carried forward from the past.
His retrograde chart underscored a man who brought natural skills into this life, He possessed innate healing abilities and total access to the invisible realms—the moksha (liberation) houses of the 4th, 8th, and 12th houses, traditionally linked to water, healing, and psychic capacity. While he brought great gifts, the retrograde burden also carried heavy karma. The difficult placement of retrograde Saturn and Mars in the 4th house of family ultimately resulted in the painful loss of his first wife and children. However, his life also exemplifies the promise of the retrograde: a second chance. He later remarried and had more children, a fulfillment brought by the eventual success of the retrograde energy.
So when the person start to pay attention to master their lessons of their natal retrograde planets will start experience different type of blessings like The Unusual Expression of the retrograde planet, as the closer proximity to Earth and the "looped" path of the retrograde motion lead to a unique or different expression of that planetary energy. For example, a Venus retrograde person might have a distinctive sense of style, preferring retro fashion or an unusual form of art. Person with retrograde Saturn, will have a higher capacity for handling difficulty, as the person will become highly capable of handling the inherent difficulties connected to that energy. They meet more obstacles, forcing a greater mastery of the subject.
Also in terms of effort and the reward: The intensified force of the closer planet means it is energetically heavier. a retrograde planet may require three times more effort and a longer timeframe to achieve results. for instance a Mercury retrograde person, might have to edit and refine a project multiple times. However, the enduring reward is a result that is longer-lasting and often far superior down the line, the fulfillment of the "second chance" promised in the later stages of life.
On the contrary, Individuals born with all direct planets tend to operate from a perceived clean slate a "beginner's mind." They are generally less attached to past-life conditioning and preconceived notions. Their life path often aligns more easily with conventional structures and the typical flow of societal expectations. Things may manifest with less friction and move at a quicker pace, as their energy is directed outwardly without the immediate need for deep, repeated introspection. They may lack the unique internal database of the heavily retrograded person, but their journey is often characterized by freshness and novelty.
So when actually things start to turn differently for people with retrograde planets?
This is when we look into (Progression of the horoscope). the energy shift of a retrograde planet in the concept of progression. We are all born with a fixed natal chart, but the planets in our progressed chart continue to move, and thus, a natal retrograde planet can eventually turn direct, or a direct one can turn retrograde, within the lifetime.
This progression marks a significant change in how the planet's energy is expressed so for example :
- Mercury: Often turns direct around the age of 20 to 25. If you were born with Mercury retrograde, you might have been withdrawn or cautious with self-expression, can become noticeably more confident in their communication style after the planet progresses to direct.
- Venus: Stays retrograde for approximately 40 days. If you were born during the first day of its retrograde cycle, it will turn direct around age 40; if born on the 20th day, around age 20. This progression often signals the completion of a major karmic cycle, often related to the people met during the retrograde phase.
You can approximate the timing of this shift by checking the ephemeris for your birth year: if a planet turned direct (or retrograde) 20 days after your birthday, the energetic shift will likely occur around the age of 20. This is the moment when a long-standing block may clear, or a period of intense introspection may begin, leading to a marked change in that life area.
It is vital to remember the transformative potential of progression, when the retrograde planet shift to direct motion. Even if someone is struggling with an area of life ruled by a natal retrograde planet, for example in the 7th House of relationships or the 10th House of career the turning of that planet to direct motion will mark a powerful shift., it can be felt and seen as a dramatic change, as the moment a retrograde planet progresses to direct motion, it is like a switch flipping in the consciousness. Years of repeated effort, slow progress, and internal struggle can suddenly ease, and the work finally begins to yield its results.
Also it can be a Release or Freedom, specially from an addiction or deep-seated behavioral pattern linked to a retrograde planet (such as a slow-to-change belief system ruled by retrograde Jupiter) may suddenly dissolve. The mind achieves a new level of clarity, and the individual is freed from the perpetual craving or block. this perspective can offer powerful encouragement to those with prominent retrogrades by assuring them that, while things may take longer and require repeated efforts in the early phases of life, this focused work leads to a unique approach and results that are longer-lasting and often three times better down the line.
It is also very important to mention even those born with all direct planets should check their progressions. a significant planet can turn retrograde by progression in later years, introducing a phase of introspection, karmic review, and slowing down, demonstrating that every soul will eventually experience both the clean flow of direct energy and the profound interiority of the retrograde.

I am watching the Victoria Beckham documentary now and she was badly bullied at school, after that the tabloid press bullied her and were really mean about her (I remember it from when I lived in UK).
I had to check her horoscope where this would show.
It was so clear. School is 3rd house, Mercury and Gemini. The media is the same 3!
Look at her Saturn and Mars in Gemini in the 12th- two cruel planets in the sign of school and media.
12th house adds a layer of malevolent, behind the back gossip and secret enemies. Her Mercury, which is another significator of media and school- has an opposition to Pluto (bullying, toxicity).
No wonder she says that every time the media gets close, she freezes and can’t act natural. It is a kind of trauma (Pluto, Saturn, Mars).
But being a strong Aries Sun, she wins at the end, and keeps proving herself, keeps going. A natural entrepreneur…
One can clearly see why she is so successful as a designer and has real talent: exalted Venus in Pisces right on MC (career, reputation)… Prolific (Jupiter on MC too) designer (Venus) at that! She also shares about running the company in the red, despite of being super successful. As you can see she has no earth (being materially savvy) in her horoscope, and despite her brilliant talent, she spent millions on glamorous shows and celebrity models and expansion.

A Zoom Lens on Natal Retrograde Planets
Many astrological texts give retrogrades a negative connotation, suggesting delays or blocks. While this can manifest, but my own perspective has evolved to view them as profound indicators of karmic imprints and intense self-questioning. When I first encountered this topic, my teacher presented an intriguing perspective, one I have since observed over time and again in hundreds of natal charts.
His core idea was that, the person born with multiple retrograde planets often exhibit precocious talent in the areas governed by that planet a natural ability even from a young age. Yet, this initial brilliance may later face friction or fall short of its potential. however, is that retrograde motion signifying a second chance or offer multiple opportunities (second, third, or even fourth) later in life to master and integrate that planetary energy. The retrograde phase means the planet is three times closer to Earth than when it is direct. This proximity intensifies its impact on the individual's life, demanding an unusual degree of preoccupation with its themes. In Vedic Astrology, a retrograde planet is often seen as having immense power and depth. The planet is at its brightest during this time, which is interpreted as a source of strength and greater focus on its issues.
So The Purpose of Repetition is when A retrograde planet essentially indicates a continuation a carrying forward of an uncompleted mission or lesson from a previous existence. We do not repeat themes in a new lifetime unless there is unfinished business. The retrograde force compels you to complete, revive, or correct a pattern. So A person with many retrograde planets is often completing a segment of their life where they were interrupted or passed away before the work was done. For instance, a retrograde Jupiter might indicate a desire to complete a significant mission or because that was abandoned prematurely. It is also important to focus on the five personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) when considering this dynamic, as the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are retrograde for such long periods that their motion is a more generational influence.
Speaking of Retrograde and karma the natal retrograde planet says that the soul that is already deeply conditioned in that are through past-life experiences or formative early-childhood influences. The challenge, and the gift, is a lifetime devoted to introspection. So in this incarnation you are compelled to study, research, and question the planet's function extensively, so it will lead you to a profound, internalized understanding. This process may initially be expressed externally as shyness, hesitation, or difficulty in initiating the planet's action.
In more spiritually developed individuals, retrograde planets are often associated with psychic abilities and gifts that were cultivated in previous lifetimes. Let's take a look on Nostradamus natal chart ,the renowned French Astrologer, who was born with all four personal planets retrograde. This configuration speaks to profound introspective abilities, a sense of being inherently different from the outside world, and an exceptional life story marked by an intense focus on an incomplete mission carried forward from the past.
His retrograde chart underscored a man who brought natural skills into this life, He possessed innate healing abilities and total access to the invisible realms—the moksha (liberation) houses of the 4th, 8th, and 12th houses, traditionally linked to water, healing, and psychic capacity. While he brought great gifts, the retrograde burden also carried heavy karma. The difficult placement of retrograde Saturn and Mars in the 4th house of family ultimately resulted in the painful loss of his first wife and children. However, his life also exemplifies the promise of the retrograde: a second chance. He later remarried and had more children, a fulfillment brought by the eventual success of the retrograde energy.
So when the person start to pay attention to master their lessons of their natal retrograde planets will start experience different type of blessings like The Unusual Expression of the retrograde planet, as the closer proximity to Earth and the "looped" path of the retrograde motion lead to a unique or different expression of that planetary energy. For example, a Venus retrograde person might have a distinctive sense of style, preferring retro fashion or an unusual form of art. Person with retrograde Saturn, will have a higher capacity for handling difficulty, as the person will become highly capable of handling the inherent difficulties connected to that energy. They meet more obstacles, forcing a greater mastery of the subject.
Also in terms of effort and the reward: The intensified force of the closer planet means it is energetically heavier. a retrograde planet may require three times more effort and a longer timeframe to achieve results. for instance a Mercury retrograde person, might have to edit and refine a project multiple times. However, the enduring reward is a result that is longer-lasting and often far superior down the line, the fulfillment of the "second chance" promised in the later stages of life.
On the contrary, Individuals born with all direct planets tend to operate from a perceived clean slate a "beginner's mind." They are generally less attached to past-life conditioning and preconceived notions. Their life path often aligns more easily with conventional structures and the typical flow of societal expectations. Things may manifest with less friction and move at a quicker pace, as their energy is directed outwardly without the immediate need for deep, repeated introspection. They may lack the unique internal database of the heavily retrograded person, but their journey is often characterized by freshness and novelty.
So when actually things start to turn differently for people with retrograde planets?
This is when we look into (Progression of the horoscope). the energy shift of a retrograde planet in the concept of progression. We are all born with a fixed natal chart, but the planets in our progressed chart continue to move, and thus, a natal retrograde planet can eventually turn direct, or a direct one can turn retrograde, within the lifetime.
This progression marks a significant change in how the planet's energy is expressed so for example :
- Mercury: Often turns direct around the age of 20 to 25. If you were born with Mercury retrograde, you might have been withdrawn or cautious with self-expression, can become noticeably more confident in their communication style after the planet progresses to direct.
- Venus: Stays retrograde for approximately 40 days. If you were born during the first day of its retrograde cycle, it will turn direct around age 40; if born on the 20th day, around age 20. This progression often signals the completion of a major karmic cycle, often related to the people met during the retrograde phase.
You can approximate the timing of this shift by checking the ephemeris for your birth year: if a planet turned direct (or retrograde) 20 days after your birthday, the energetic shift will likely occur around the age of 20. This is the moment when a long-standing block may clear, or a period of intense introspection may begin, leading to a marked change in that life area.
It is vital to remember the transformative potential of progression, when the retrograde planet shift to direct motion. Even if someone is struggling with an area of life ruled by a natal retrograde planet, for example in the 7th House of relationships or the 10th House of career the turning of that planet to direct motion will mark a powerful shift., it can be felt and seen as a dramatic change, as the moment a retrograde planet progresses to direct motion, it is like a switch flipping in the consciousness. Years of repeated effort, slow progress, and internal struggle can suddenly ease, and the work finally begins to yield its results.
Also it can be a Release or Freedom, specially from an addiction or deep-seated behavioral pattern linked to a retrograde planet (such as a slow-to-change belief system ruled by retrograde Jupiter) may suddenly dissolve. The mind achieves a new level of clarity, and the individual is freed from the perpetual craving or block. this perspective can offer powerful encouragement to those with prominent retrogrades by assuring them that, while things may take longer and require repeated efforts in the early phases of life, this focused work leads to a unique approach and results that are longer-lasting and often three times better down the line.
It is also very important to mention even those born with all direct planets should check their progressions. a significant planet can turn retrograde by progression in later years, introducing a phase of introspection, karmic review, and slowing down, demonstrating that every soul will eventually experience both the clean flow of direct energy and the profound interiority of the retrograde.
