Urgent Announcement from the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.. A message the whole country needs to know.

Regarding an online racket involving the buying and selling of private photos and sexual content of children and women through social media.

We have received reports of an online racket operating through Groups on social media platforms, mainly Facebook, where sexual images and private photos of children and women are being bought and sold for money.

Also these days, social media activists have already been raising awareness about this situation by publishing a large number of posts and videos.

Accordingly, based on our initial investigations and findings, we have referred the matter to the Sri Lanka Police Children and Women’s Bureau and the Computer Crimes Investigation Division.

When checking the relevant groups, it was observed that through fake accounts, they were attempting to sell photos and video clips of their own close ones. There were also instances where photos and videos of women who are members of their own families were being distributed this way.

It was also identified that most of these groups are being operated from foreign countries.

Since there is a risk of women and children in your family becoming unsafe even within your own home, we kindly request parents to pay close attention to their children’s use of social media and the friends they interact with through it.

Furthermore, if you observe that a member of your family has become a victim of such a racket, or has become addicted to it, you can seek psychosocial counseling or other legal assistance through the toll-free helpline numbers *1938* and *1929*.

We further inform you that this situation has the full attention of our Ministry and that necessary urgent interventions will be made to prevent women and children from becoming victims through this.
