Investors, I am happy to announce that I have been featured on a newsletter, talking all things personal finance. I'll be talking more about finance in the coming Mondays, check out my first piece and subscribe for more ..see you next week!
3 major ways I am taking charge of my
finances at 26:
Living Debt Free - at 21, i got myself into massive debt,
$20K if not more, i was making great money for my age
and after so much back and forth, I later paid it all off at
24, I was draining my savings living my best life, a life i
couldn’t afford, obviously, and with that; came a lot of
anxiety, from watching my savings go from 7 figures
slowly to 6, high interest on the loan etc, I panicked as I
knew a lot was going on and i'd be messed up a couple
of months after, so I had to pay everything off, it's
been a hard and easy life ever since but I am never
looking back, I will talk about it in my Finance Fridays
segment.
Tracking My Expenses - I fail so many times at this but I
never give up. In April, i made a simple spreadsheet on
google sheets for Q2, Q3, & Q4, i pinned it to my
desktop home and was faithful for 60 days, i have
nothing for the Month of June but worrying not as I am
going to get back at it now that we’re in a new quarter. I
value data, and it was important for me to observe how
and where my money goes every month before coming
up with a budget, and being a low income earner, that’s
why i didn’t talk of creating a budget, instead, I am
tracking my expenses, budget creation will come later.
Building an Emergency Fund - my goal for the next 1
year is to build my 3-6 months emergency fund
exclusively - started saving on April 12, 2021 - end is
May 2022, my monthly bills are $550 (house bills), I
have no extra expenditure at the moment, so far, I have
saved $150 in my emergency fund, I shall keep updating
this figure as we go, goal is $3300 by May 2022. How
am I doing this? by splitting bills with my housemate and
saving up the other 1/2. I make 300-400 USD a month in
net, my total savings for each month so far range from
$100-$200. FOR ME, this specific goal revolved a lot
around my mental health and emotional stability. Reflect
on what is most important for you in your day-to-day
life, and create a plan to achieve that. Let's do it
together!
