Princess Yennenga: The Warrior Queen Mother of the Mossi People


A legendary figure from the oral traditions of the Mossi people—Princess Yennenga. Though she is later revered as the Queen Mother of the Mossi, her story begins as a princess born into a royal lineage. Her father was said to be a powerful king in what is now northern Ghana.


Princess Yennenga was celebrated not only for her beauty but also for her exceptional skills as a horse rider, archer, and warrior. She mastered the bow and spear and was considered one of the finest warriors in the kingdom. Her combat prowess made her invaluable to her father, who relied on her military leadership. However, her desire to marry and start a family created tension between them. Her father, unwilling to lose such a remarkable warrior, forbade her from marrying.


According to legend, Yennenga devised a powerful metaphor to express her frustration. She cultivated a lush field of wheat that greatly impressed her father. But over time, she allowed it to rot. When her father asked why she had done such a thing, she replied:


“You call me precious, yet you let me wither like this wheat in the field.”
