The original film from 1986 was inspired by an article written for a small California magazine. The author of the text, Ehud Yonay, reserved the copyrights, so Paramount Pictures obtained the exclusive right to film the story shortly after. After 36 years, the creators returned to the story with a sequel of the film, which became a hit all over the world. Meanwhile, relatives of Yonay, who died in 2012, claim the studio's rights to the article expired in 2000, and are suing Paramount for the release of Top Gun: Maverick, with no longer having the license for the story on which the film was based. The author's widow and son are seeking indefinite damages, including a part of the proceeds from Top Gun: Maverick and a ban on further distribution of the film by Paramount. The label's representatives firmly deny the accusations.
