'ചലച്ചിത്രോത്സവങ്ങളുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം' എന്ന വിഷയത്തിൽ ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച്ച നടന്ന ഓപ്പൺ ഫോറം സിനിമ സെൻസർ ചെയ്യുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചൂടേറിയ ചർച്ചക്ക് വേദിയായി.

ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയിൽ 19 ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ പ്രദർശനാനുമതി നിഷേധിച്ച സെൻസർ ബോർഡ് തീരുമാനത്തിൽ ഫോറം ശക്തമായ പ്രതിഷേധം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തി.

"ചിന്തിക്കാനും സ്വപ്നം കാണാനും ആരെയും പേടിക്കേണ്ടതില്ലല്ലോ" എന്ന് സംവിധായകൻ ടി വി ചന്ദ്രൻ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി. "സിനിമ എന്നത് ആവിഷ്കാര സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യമുള്ള മാധ്യമമാണ്. ബാറ്റിൽഷിപ്പ് പൊട്ടംകിൻ പോലൊരു ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രദർശനം തടയിടുന്നത് മുഴുവൻ സിനിമകളെയും തടയുന്നതിന് തുല്യമാണ്," അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയുടെയും സാംസ്കാരിക വകുപ്പു മന്ത്രിയുടെയും ഉറപ്പുകൾ ആശ്വാസമായെങ്കിലും നാളെ ഐഎഫ്എഫ്കെയെ തകർക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിക്കാൻ പ്രതിഷേധം തുടരണമെന്നും ചന്ദ്രൻ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു.

ചലച്ചിത്രമേള ആരംഭിച്ച വർഷം മുതൽ തന്നെ നിശ്ശബ്ദരാക്കപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ ശബ്ദമായി മാറുകയെന്ന വ്യക്തമായ രാഷ്ട്രീയം പിന്തുടരുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും, ഓരോ വർഷങ്ങളിലും മൂന്നാം ലോക ആഫ്രോ-ഏഷ്യൻ, ലാറ്റിനമേരിക്കൻ ഭാഷകളിലെ സിനിമകളെ മുൻനിരയിൽ എത്തിക്കാൻ മേള ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നും സംവിധായകനും ചലച്ചിത്ര അക്കാദമി മുൻ ചെയർമാനുമായ കമൽ പറഞ്ഞു.

ബീഫ് എന്നപേര് ഉള്ളതുകൊണ്ടുമാത്രം പ്രദർശനയോഗ്യമല്ലാതാക്കപ്പെട്ട ചിത്രത്തോടുള്ള അനീതിയും, പാഠ്യപദ്ധതിയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള ബാറ്റിൽഷിപ്പ് പൊട്ടംകിൻ പോലുള്ള സിനിമകൾ വരെ തടയുന്നതിലുള്ള അപ്രീതിയും കമൽ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു

കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രാദേശിക സെൻസർ ബോർഡുകൾ കണ്ട് അംഗീകരിച്ച സിനിമകളുടെ പോലും സിനോപ്സിസ് മുംബൈയിലേക്ക് അയച്ചു അനുമതി വാങ്ങിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നതിനെ സംവിധായകൻ ടി കെ രാജീവ് കുമാർ വിമർശിച്ചു.

മനഃപൂർവം സിനിമകൾക്കുള്ള അനുമതി നൽകുന്നത് വൈകിപ്പിക്കുന്ന അവസ്ഥയുണ്ടെന്ന് പ്രേമേന്ദ്ര മജുംദാർ പറഞ്ഞു.

സാമ്പത്തിക നഷ്ടം എന്ന ഒറ്റ കാരണം കൊണ്ട് ആവിഷ്കാര സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിൻമേലുള്ള വെല്ലുവിളി പലരും ഭയം കാരണം മൂടിവെക്കുന്നതായി സംവിധായകൻ മനോജ് കാന പറഞ്ഞു.

"ഞാനൊരു ശവപ്പെട്ടിയുമായാണ് വന്നത്. നമ്മുടെ ഭരണഘടനയുടെ ആമുഖം അതിൽ വച്ചു കുഴിച്ചുമൂടുവാനായി. എന്നാൽ അതിനു സമ്മതിക്കാതെ പ്രദർശനാനുമതി തന്ന സംസ്ഥാന സർക്കാരിനു നന്ദി" എന്ന് നടൻ അലൻസിയർ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു.

സിനിമയെന്നത് എന്നും സൃഷ്ടാവിന്റെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യമാണെന്ന് നടൻ സന്തോഷ് കീഴാറ്റൂർ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി.

Kelly Fyffe-Marshall: A Love Letter to Jamaica*

_(Interview with Canadian filmmaker and Spirit of Cinema recipient Kelly Fyffe-Marshall)_

For Kelly Fyffe-Marshall, her film ‘When Morning Comes’ is nothing short of a love letter to her country, Jamaica, and to its people. Among all her works, this film remains the closest to her heart.

As the Canadian filmmaker receives the Spirit of Cinema Award at the 30th International Film Festival of Kerala, she speaks about the honour, her film’s emotional core, and the politics embedded in her works.

‘When Morning Comes,’ screening at IFFK on December 15, tells the story of those forced to leave their homeland. Fyffe-Marshall says the film attempts to bring to the forefront the realities of Jamaica, moving beyond the assumptions and stereotypes often associated with the island. It is, for her, a way of placing her memories, her family, and people like herself onto the “big screen.”

Arriving in Kerala for the festival, she felt an unexpected sense of familiarity. “I found Jamaica and Kerala similar in geography,” she notes. She hoped that Malayali audiences watching ‘When Morning Comes’ will also sense this connection.

Fyffe-Marshall’s politics are inseparable from her cinema. They serve as an internal compass, something that naturally flows into her work. This same politics extends to her initiative 'Make Ripples,' a movement grounded in the belief that individual effort can spark collective change, rather than waiting for others to lead it.

Her TEDx talk, “Make Ripples: Make Your Change,” encapsulates this idea.
Creating safe spaces for Black people, women, and queer communities, she says, should not be seen as an external responsibility but as a mindset cultivated within each person. “This kind of change,” she believes, “is my message to the world.”

As a Black woman living in North America, she feels a profound responsibility, both as an artist and as a member of her community, to remain faithful to her culture and experiences. Her work is shaped by this duty to represent, resist, and reclaim.

“Many people see cinema merely as entertainment,” she says, “but for me, film is a tool for change.”

Fyffe-Marshall’s entry into cinema can be traced back to her parents, both of whom worked in media. She spent a period in theatre before moving to Canada for higher studies. Life after graduation, however, was far from easy; finding work proved difficult. It was during this period that she came up with 'Haven,' a short film that became a turning point in her career. Produced during a financially difficult time, the success of Haven gave her the push needed to establish herself in the film world. Fyffe-Marshall later settled in Canada.

The filmmaker advises youth that it is not the length of a film but its essence that matters. Her powerful short film 'Black Bodies,' for instance, runs for just 90 seconds, yet delivers an impact that far outweighs its duration..

*Chief Secretary calls for setting up IFFK Digital Archive*

Emphasising the need to preserve the cultural memory of Kerala’s most celebrated film festival, Chief Secretary Dr. A Jayathilak called for setting up a comprehensive digital archive of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). He made this significant remark while inaugurating the Festival Office for the 30th edition of the festival on Thursday.

“This festival carries a legacy that belongs not just to the present, but to the future generations as well. Digitising past catalogues and making them available online would be an invaluable contribution cherished by film lovers, students, and researchers across the world,” he said. Jayathilak urged the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy to take up the initiative as part of its cultural responsibility.

Chalachitra Academy Secretary C Ajoy presided over. Director of the Department of Culture, Dr. Divya S. Iyer, Academy Vice Chairperson Cuckoo Parameswaran, former Academy Chairman T K Rajeev Kumar, FFI Vice President S Suresh Kumar, and K Sunil Kumar were among those present.

Marking the milestone 30th edition of IFFK, organisers released colourful balloons into the air symbolising three decades of cinematic celebration, freedom of expression, and artistic diversity.

The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) has played a decisive role in reshaping the aesthetics and sensibilities of Malayalam cinema, opined former Chief Secretary K Jayakumar. He was speaking after inaugurating the Media Cell of the 30th IFFK at Tagore Theatre on Thursday.

Even in a rapidly changing digital world, the values, critical insights and cultural legacy passed down by earlier generations continue to guide Kerala’s cinematic culture with clarity and purpose, he felt. He added that the strong and enthusiastic presence of young audience has significantly strengthened the IFFK over the years, playing a crucial role in the festival’s growth and relevance.

Kerala Media Academy Chairperson R S Babu presided over the function. State Cultural Welfare Fund Board Chairman Madhupal, Information Public Relations Department Director T V Subhash, State Chalachitra Academy Secretary C Ajoy, Vice Chairperson Kuku Parameswaran, Actor Sarayu, Media Committee Convenor Anupama G Nair among others were present.

*'Indian Cinema Now' has 7 films showcasing contemporary India*

The 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is all set to celebrate the vibrant and diverse array of Indian films, highlighting the unique perspectives of contemporary filmmakers under 'Indian Cinema Now' category.

The selected lineup features seven films; Songs of Forgotten trees, Full Plate, Don’t tell mother, Hearth and Home, Theatre, Flames and Mirage.

‘Songs of forgotten trees’, directed by Anuparna Roy, paints a quiet moving portrait of two migrant women in Mumbai, their overlapping lives, survival and fragile bond in the harsh city’s margins. The film, premiered in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival bagged the Best director award for Anuparna Roy.

‘Full Plate’, directed by Thannishtha Chatterjee, features Amreen, a Muslim homemaker in Mumbai who must step out of her home and earn a living after her husband’s accident. She challenges societal norms and discover her own strength. The film had its Indian premiere at the Dharamsala International Film Festival (DIFF) and had won the Visionary Director Award at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

The directorial debut of Anoop Lokur, ‘Don't tell mother' is a coming of age drama that follows Aakash, a nine year old boy who is subjected to physical violence at school. The film ‘Hearth and Home,’ directed by Prabhash Chandra, is a quiet, intimate portrayal of aging and caregiving. The film revolves around Bhaveen Gossain, a 63- year old son, who is dedicated looking after his 95-year old mother, Savitri. The film offers an unfiltered and intimate portrayal of the profound bond between a mother and son, dealing with complex themes such as aging, mortality and isolation.

‘Theatre’, directed by Nishanth Kalidindi, follows Das, a cattle-farmer who joins a cosmopolitan theatre troupe in Pondicherry. But when tensions and rivalries grow within the group, the play they are rehearsing begins to unravel. The film had its world premiere at the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

‘Flames’ directed by Ravi Shankar Kaushik, portrays the story of Mahesh, a mute migrant labourer who is forced to embark on a survival journey to save his 10-year old son, falsely accused of murder. The film portrays the desperate fight for survival and the problems born out of caste hierarchy.

‘Mirage’, directed by Ishaan Ghose, traces the intersecting lives of a single mother and a young man who tries to find a better job and life. It portrays the struggle of two young dreamers who struggle to survive, accomplish their dreams and reclaim their identity in present day Kolkata.

‎രാജീവ്‌ നാഥ് സംവിധാനവും നിർമാണവും നിർവഹിച്ച ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കഥ സക്കറിയയും രഞ്ജി പണിക്കരും ചേർന്നാണ് തയ്യാറാക്കിയത്. സുരേഷ് പി നായരുടെ ഛായാഗ്രഹണവും ബീനാ പോളിന്റെ എഡിറ്റിങും ഔസേപ്പച്ചൻ്റെ സംഗീതവും ചിത്രത്തെ മികച്ചതാക്കി. ഓസ്ലോ ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയിലും ചിത്രം പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

*​IFFK will honor Director Rajeev Nath for his five decades in cinema*


The 30th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) will celebrate five decades of cinematic contribution by filmmaker Rajeev Nath with a special screening of his acclaimed film ‘Janani’. The screening marks 50 years of his journey in cinema, which began in 1975 to honour his impact in the world of cinema.

His debut film ‘Thanal' (1978) earned him the Best Director Award and secured the Best Actor Award for actor M G Soman in Kerala State Film awards. Nearly four decades ago, Rajeev Nath also served as the Chairperson of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, contributing significantly to Kerala’s film culture and policy-making.

A defining aspect of Nath’s career has been his commitment to artistic independence. Most of his films were produced under his own production banners. His notable works include ‘Kadaltheerathu (1988)’, based on the celebrated story by O V Vijayan, his hindi film ‘Anubhav (2009)’ along with critically acclaimed films such as ‘Aham’ (1992) starring Mohanlal, ’David and Goliath’,’ Poottu’,’ Rasam’.

His cinema is widely recognised for its sensitive probing of human relationships, set against the backdrop of spirituality and complex social dilemmas.

‘Janani’, a 1999 film holds a special place in his filmography as the film that marked the launch of his production house, Chaya Films, and earned him the 47th National Film award for Best Direction.This film was done with a screenplay by Zachariah and Rajeev Nath, based on a story by Ranji Panicker. The cinematography was by Suresh P Nair, editing by BIna Paul, and music composed by Ousepachan.

The film with a duration of 93 minutes, is set in the cloistered world of a convent in Kerala. It revolves around seven Catholic nuns who are unexpectedly entrusted with the care of an orphaned infant, a circumstance that deeply challenges their vows, faith, and their understanding of maternal love. The film features Siddique as Father Roslin and Santhakumari as Sister Victoria.

This tribute displays IFFK’s commitment to honouring the visionary legacies that have shaped Indian and world cinema.
