Luigi Mangione admitted that he shot United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson as he pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges on the morning of August 14, 2026. Mangione was not charged with murder in the federal case, which accused him of only of stalking Thompson.
Judge Margaret M. Garnett accepted the plea and will sentence Mangione on Dec. 18. He faces a maximum of life in prison.

The next time someone tells you ICE detainees had it coming, remind them that many people who died in ICE custody are noncriminals who crossed the border legally as asylum seekers and/or other protected statuses. Under the second Trump administration, deaths in ICE detention has reached a 22-year high, though the exact number is projected to be higher than reported by the Department of Homeland Security due to ICE's failure to report the deaths of victims hospitalized as a result of their medical negligence.
