Still frame from an October 1919 newsreel known to have been shown at the Prytania Theater announcing the murder of grocer Mike Pepitone by the so-called "Axeman of New Orleans," a serial killer active in the city between 1918 and 1919.

The killer – who has never been identified or apprehended – is believed to be responsible for eight attacks, largely on members of the Italian immigrant community. The perpetrator was known to chisel out a panel in the back door of the victims' home and sneak into their bedrooms before bludgeoning them with an axe. Those who survived the Axeman's attacks described him as a tall, pale man wearing laborer's clothes. He often asked his victim for money, but never removed any valuables from the scene.

In March 1919, someone claiming to be the Axeman sent a letter to the Times-Picayune, announcing that he was "not a human being, but a demon from the hottest hell." He threatened to "pass over" New Orleans at 12:15 AM on the following Tuesday, but swore "by all the devils of the nether regions" to spare all those in whose home a jazz band was in "full swing" at that time. When the dreaded Tuesday arrived, jazz bands played in gambling halls, gin joints, and private homes all over the city. There were no murders that night.

Daguerreotype miniature of Captain Ashley Lionel Macarti (1834-1862) of the 4th Louisiana Infantry and his wife Josephine Macarti (1838-1862), recovered from a burial pit on the Shiloh battlefield in 2017.

The Macartis originated in Ireland, and the name itself is a French corruption of "McCarthy" – legend has it that the family patriarch, Maccarthey-Mactaig, fled to France to escape political and religious tyranny imposed by England. His descendants later immigrated to New Orleans in the early days of the Louisiana colony.

Ashley Macarti joined the Confederate Army shortly after Lincoln's call for troops in April 1861. Less than a week later, he hastily married young Josephine Celeste de Marigny, the wealthy heiress of a neighboring plantation, at St. Louis Cathedral. Family tradition holds that while Ashley was at war, Josephine spied for the Confederacy in Union-occupied New Orleans. Shortly after hearing of Ashley's death at Shiloh in 1862, Josephine disappeared. It is believed she took her own life.

Portrait of Jean-Louis Antoine D'Hemecourt (1754-1781), French Creole planter of St. John the Baptist Parish. This oil on canvas painting is thought to be the work of Matthew Harris Jouett, circa 1777.

As a youth, D'Hemecourt was known throughout the river parishes as a gambler and a duelist. But when his older brother Bernard D'Hemecourt raised a militia to fight the British under Galvez, Jean-Louis was left in charge of the family's sugar plantation. Under his tenure, cultivation on the property rose by over forty percent. The brothers would never meet again, as Jean-Louis died suddenly in New Orleans at the age of 27 and was laid to rest in St. Louis Cemetery #1.

The portrait is currently being showcased at D'Hemecourt Plantation Museum alongside an original document signed by Thomas Jefferson, dated 1806, in which the president appointed Bernard D'Hemecourt and others to the Orleans Territorial Council. D'Hemecourt Plantation is a fine example of late 18th century French colonial architecture, and is also available as a wedding venue.
