The Japanese actor Toshiaki Nishizawa (西沢利明) was born 90 years ago, on January 20th, 1936. He began as a stage actor in the early 1960s and quickly transitioned to film and, primarily, TV acting. Toshiaki worked up until his death on April 11th, 2013.

The Japanese actress Shinobu Chihara (千原しのぶ) was born 95 years ago today, on January 16th, 1931. She had a successful career at Toei throughout the 50s in period dramas, but she did not make the shift to Yakuza films in the 60s. She passed away on November 22nd, 2009. From 1963 onwards, she began appearing in films less frequently, but still played occasional roles in films and on TV until 1995. She made her final in-person appearance as a guest at a retrospective for fellow Toei star Kinnosuke Nakamura in June 2009. Chihara passed away on November 22nd, 2009.

The Japanese actor and stuntman Kenji Ōba (大葉健二) celebrates his 70th birthday today, born on February 5th, 1955. Inspired by Shin'ichi Chiba as a kid in the late '60s, he joined Chiba's newly founded "Japan Action Club" and mentored under him. He went on to appear in numerous tokusatsu shows and films.

The Japanese actor Mikio Narita (成田三樹夫) was born 90 years ago on January 31st, 1935. He primarily played villainous characters and regularly appeared in the films of Kinji Fukasaku. He passed away on April 9th, 1990.

The Japanese film director Torajirō Saitō (斎藤寅次郎) was born 120 years ago, on January 30th, 1905. He was primarily known for his silent comedies, a majority of which are now lost, but he directed over 200 films from 1926 until he retired in 1962. He passed away on May 1st, 1982.

The Japanese screenwriter Masashige Narusawa was born 100 years ago, on January 29th, 1925. He wrote screenplays for the films of many acclaimed directors, including Kenji Mizoguchi. Narusawa passed away on February 13th, 2021, at the age of 96. (Picture 1)

The Japanese actor Akira Ishihama (石浜朗) was born 90 years ago, on January 29th, 1935. One of his most notable roles was in "Harakiri" (1962) as the rōnin cruelly forced to commit seppuku with a bamboo blade. He passed away on July 26th, 2022 at 87 years old. (Pictures 2 and 3)
