Why I Make Christian Music: A Testimony


I grew up listening to all kinds of music—whatever was playing on the radio or around the house. But by the time I hit my teenage years, I was deep into rock. Hairbands. Metal. The louder, the better. And over time, the music got darker. Heavier. More consuming.


Then one day, God whispered something I didn’t want to hear: “Get rid of all your rock music.”


I’ll be honest—it broke my heart. I had spent years building playlists, collecting songs, and letting that music speak into my life. I thought maybe I could just upload it all to the cloud and delete it from my phone. But that wasn’t obedience. That was compromise.


Around that time, I found a book called The Devil’s Disciples by Jeff Godwin. It helped me understand the depth of listening to rock and roll and that not all music is heaven-sent. Just because it sounds good doesn’t mean it’s spiritually good. Still, I dragged my feet. For a few months, I wrestled. But the conviction didn’t go away. God wasn’t letting it go—because He was fighting for my heart. So I obeyed. I deleted the music. And when you sweep the house clean, you’d better fill it with something holy.


So I started listening to Christian music. But quickly, I realized not all “Christian” music lifts up Christ. Some songs don’t even mention Jesus’ name, let alone His blood, the Cross, or repentance. That’s a huge red flag for me. A good guitar riff and a soaring chorus aren’t enough if the message doesn’t glorify the King of Kings. For a while, I leaned heavily into old hymns. And honestly, I still do. The Old Rugged Cross, Just As I Am, Sweet Hour of Prayer—they settle my spirit in a way few things can. There’s power in the simplicity and reverence of those songs.


But I longed for something more. Something bold. Something that married the grit of rock with the glory of Jesus. That’s how Messiah Rising was born. Out of the ashes of old playlists. Out of the deep need for music that speaks truth. That proclaims Jesus—not vaguely or metaphorically—but clearly, powerfully, and unashamedly. Songs about the blood, the mercy, the Cross, and the Risen Savior who still stirs hearts today.


This isn’t just music—it’s ministry. It’s worship. It’s war.


We don’t need more entertainment that tiptoes around the name of Jesus.


We need songs that wake up the sleeping, warn the lost, and worship the Lamb.


That’s why I make Christian music.


To lift up the only Name that saves--Jesus!


To glorify the One who changed my playlist—and my life.
