I won’t be doing a video review for A Little Life, but I still wanted to share my thoughts! The book was GOOD but I personally found it a bit draining by the end lol
Malcolm, JB, Willem and Jude became friends in college. As they graduated and grew into adulthood together, their relationships took on many twists and turns. They shared many highs together (blossoming careers, growing families, genuine friendship and support) but equally as many lows (betrayal, addiction, jealousy, doubt, pride).
The book is mostly centered around Jude, who even though he loves his friends to death, cannot bring himself to open up about his extremely abusive, unfortunate childhood or the ramifications of said childhood on his adult life; which at many points causes division and feelings of frustration within the group.
I loved that the book was unique in its focus on the brotherhood of these 4 men and the lasting impact of trauma on someone’s life. However, I don’t love that I was able to predict some of the ending of the story and that people overhyped the importance of some characters over others! It could be said that Willem and Harold were more magnanimous than Jude! But I digress lol
I’d recommend this book for sure; just brace for impact! There are tons of heavy topics in this one.
