Some early procedural VFX tests based on the idea I posted yesterday.
I still need to tweak the settings and draw real textures, but for now, the blob (4th image) is driving all the animations.
After a little more testing, I'll work on the video covering the shader graph, and then get back to working on the characters (and first few animations).
Working on a flame VFX shader with a stylized/anime look. So far, I've set up the environment and will work on the flame itself next.
I started by patching the Three.js default fog to add vertical fog similar to game engines, and I patched the built in bloom to add a soft transition to the threshold setting the glow boundary, which is a hard cutoff by default.
Next, I'm going to do mesh displacement and texture scrolling on an egg shape to build the flame.
I'll use texture scrolling for combat and environment VFX in the game project, so this is a great way for me to get more familiar with TSL shaders.
I'm quite pleased with how this is coming along. Just under 1.2 million points with 1:10m resolution geographic data, with elevation sampled at 0.1 degrees, compressed into a 10mb model -- plus some lighting. All smooth even on my not-so-recent smartphone.
I'm going to see if I can write a shader to animate a particle emission effect, but otherwise I'll get started on the video for this.
The hardest thing about my latest devlog was that I had to give up on doing a timelapse with commentary.
Because I'm inexperienced with Blender, there was a lot of reworking and undo/redo to the point where I decided it would be better to talk about each step instead of showing myself creating them in realtime.

Thank you for 200 subs! New video coming this weekend. One last technical one before getting back to the creative side.
While learning about shaders for the past few videos, I also planned out the combat system and setting for my game.

One of my first Three.js projects was this 3D globe that I made using a point cloud based on satellite data (with exaggerated elevation).
That was a few months ago, and today I had an idea about making it so you can interactively fold and unfold between a flat map and globe.
I'll be making a couple videos on the topic soon:

I finished working on my base meshes and will start working on my next devlog shortly.
I'll auto-rig them in Mixamo again for the demo, but once I model their outfits and weapons, I'll need to do the bones and weight painting myself.

I've been studying 3D models from games like League of Legends and Zenless Zone Zero. It's harder to find good male references than female.

Blocked out some mannequins that will eventually become my player models.

I just got 8-way movement for 6 sided grid tiles working nicely. The code for episode 4 is done and I've started working on the video.
